A method for identifying an iris image can include obtaining an iris image of an eye, segmenting the iris image, generating, from the segmented iris image, a normalized iris image, and generating, from the normalized iris image, an iris template. The method can also include generating a modified iris template by extracting a portion of the iris template, comparing the modified iris template with a plurality of previously stored other modified iris templates and matching the modified iris template with one of the plurality of previously stored other modified iris templates. The method can also include generating a modified iris template by extracting a portion of the iris template, comparing the modified iris template with a plurality of previously stored other modified iris templates, and matching the modified iris template with one of the plurality of previously stored other modified iris templates.

An eye tracking system employs a first line camera that is configured to track horizontal eye motion and a second line camera that is configured to track vertical eye motion. Output signals from the two line cameras are applied to a processor which identifies and tracks eye motion, using a correlation or edge detection algorithm on boundaries between the sclera, iris and pupil. The system includes multiple controlled light sources and the horizontal and vertical line cameras are configured to track eye motion in response to light stimulus provided by the light sources according to a programmed algorithm. Eye motion for an individual is collected and compared to a model in order to obtain a measure of fitness for the individual. The device may also be used to derive inputs to a computer system based on eye motion or gaze direction.

A CRT 10 has an evacuated envelope 11 comprising a funnel 15 having a neck 14 and an open end. The funnel 15 is sealed at the open end to a faceplate panel 12 having a luminescent screen 22 formed on a viewing area of an interior surface of the faceplate panel by an electrophotographic screening process. The screen 22 comprises a multiplicity of different color-emitting phosphor elements. A light absorbing matrix 23 has a first portion that includes a multiplicity of openings therein overlying the viewing area of the faceplate panel, and a second portion providing an imperforate border 123 extending beyond the viewing area. The phosphor elements are disposed within the openings in the matrix. A color selection electrode 25 is mounted within the faceplate panel 12, in proximity to the screen 22. An electron gun 26 is centrally disposed within the neck 14 for generating and directing a plurality of electron beams 28 toward the screen 22. The screen structure is improved by having at least one of the phospor elements disposed on the imperforate border 123 of the matrix 23.

A method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent line screen 22 within a viewing area of a faceplate panel 12 includes providing a matrix 23 having a border 123 extending beyond the viewing area. A photoreceptor 36 overlies the matrix. The photoreceptor is electrostatically charged and a color selection electrode 25, having a multiplicity of openings therethrough, is mounted therein. The panel 12 is positioned on an exposure device having a multi-position visible light source. A least one series of light exposures utilizes both first and second order illumination to form selectively discharge the photoreceptor 36 in the viewing area and on the border 123 of the matrix. Then, triboelectrically charged, color-emitting phosphor is deposited onto the illuminated areas of the photoreceptor to form phosphor lines in the viewing area and phosphor traps over the matrix border.

The present invention provides an acoustic dispenser for propelling objects toward a substrate, together with methods of use of the dispenser. The acoustic dispenser uses a source of acoustic vibration and a membrane for the application of acoustic vibration wherein the objects are propelled from the membrane to a substrate. The acoustic dispenser and the methods of the invention can be used with numerous types of objects. In some embodiments, the objects are particles in a dry powder, which can include, for example, a pharmaceutically active ingredient. In other embodiments, the objects are beads, which preferably have an average diameter of about 100 to about 300 microns. Additionally, the acoustic dispenser can be used with more than one type of object, for example, two types of objects such as beads and dry powder. In some instances, the acoustic dispenser further comprises a membrane for separating one type of object from the other based on size, whereby one type of object is separated from the other prior to deposition.

Iris recognition is achieved by (1) iris acquisition that permits a user to self-position his or her eye into an imager's field of view without the need for any physical contact, (2) spatially locating the data defining that portion of a digitized video image of the user's eye that defines solely the iris thereof without any initial spatial condition of the iris being provided, and (3) pattern matching the spatially located data defining the iris of the user's eye with stored data defining a model iris by employing normalized spatial correlation for first comparing, at each of a plurality of spatial scales, each of distinctive spatial characteristics of the respective irises that are spatially registered with one another to quantitatively determine, at each of the plurality of spatial scales, a goodness value of match at that spatial scale, and then judging whether or not the pattern which manifests solely the iris of the user's eye matches the digital data which manifests solely the model iris in accordance with a certain combination of the quantitatively-determined goodness values of match at each of said plurality of spatial scales.

Automated, non-invasive iris recognition system and method

An apparatus and method for controlling an instrument is provided. The device may be a cutting tool for use in surgery, or other type of device applied to transform a specific object located in a defined area. The apparatus comprises a marker having a predetermined color. The marker is applied to the specific device or tool to form a marked device. An imager generates video signals representing a color image of the defined area. A color detector processes the imager signals to detect a range of colors in the image represented by the imager signals. The range of colors includes the predetermined color. The color detector provides an output signal representing instances of signals in the detected color range. A detection mechanism processes the output signal of the color detector to provide an indication of whether the detected instances represented by the output signal conform to the marked device. A control mechanism disables the marked device if the detected instances do not conform to the marked device, in response to the indication provided by the detection mechanism.
