An apparatus includes a light emitting diode (LED) chip; a laser light source; a front heat sink including first and second holes; a lens arranged to extend over the first hole; a back heat sink; and an insulating circuit board including a third hole, the circuit board sandwiched between the heat sinks such that the second hole and the third holes are aligned. The LED chip is mounted in a surface of the circuit board facing the front heat sink, and arranged such that it aligns with the first hole and the lens. The laser light source is provided in the back heat sink and arranged such that it extends at least partially through the second and third holes.

A rescue torch apparatus utilizes coherent and incoherent light sources to help firefighters navigate through smoke and fire filled environments. The rescue torch apparatus includes a coherent-light emitter, an incoherent-light emitter, an elongated body, a rotatable-activation mechanism, a portable power unit, and an inductive receiver. The incoherent-light emitter emits continuous light for general illumination or short bursts of light to activate photo-luminescent display panels worn by firefighters. The coherent-light emitter emits beams of coherent light that penetrate through smoke filled environments and outline obstacles. The elongated body houses and protects the coherent-light emitter and the incoherent-light emitter. The rotatable-activation mechanism allows for hands-free operation of the light sources. Power is provided by a portable power unit mated to an inductive receiver for wireless recharging.

A system and method of generating perceived white light by laser. The system comprises a laser, a phosphoric substrate, and optionally a diffraction grating. In one embodiment, a blue laser beam from the laser penetrates the phosphoric substrate to create perceived white light in a Gaussian distribution appropriate for emergency lighting. In another embodiment, the blue laser beam is split into multiple beams by the diffraction grating. The multiple beams penetrate the phosphoric substrate to create perceived white light in a Gaussian distribution appropriate for emergency lighting.

A laser lighting device provides a broad range illumination for an area, such as a smoke filled space, a hallway or an underwater environment with certain turbidity. This lighting device contains a laser diode as a light source and a diffraction grating that is able to diffract an input laser light beam generated from the laser diode into a plurality of output laser light beams with the cross section of the plurality of output laser light beams forming a pattern comprising a plurality of light spots. In addition, this pattern may be in a donut shape. That is to say, the power of a light spot formed by a zero order light beam is lower than other light spots' power. Further, this laser lighting device is used to provide lighting with depth perception and forward visibility.

A heat sink mount for a laser diode comprises three main components, a diode ring, a diode bed and a diode container. The diode ring comprises an inner hole that matches a metal stem part of the laser diode. The diode bed comprises a first part and a second part. The diode ring is fitted into the first part of the diode bed. The inner surface of the first part is tightly contacting the outer surface of the diode ring. The diode container comprises a part a and a part b. The diode bed is fitted into the part a of the diode container, via the gripping contact between the thread on the inner surface of the part a and the thread on the outer surface of the second part of diode bed. This heat sink mount has lower costs and higher heat dissipation efficiency.

The present invention provides a method of using a laser lighting apparatus for fire rescue navigation in a smoke-filled structure. The laser lighting apparatus is portably carried at a user's body and directly operated by the user to perform the steps of turning the laser lighting apparatus on to output one or more coherent light planes; projecting the one or more coherent light planes on objects in the smoke-filled structure to produce one or more light stripes on surfaces of the objects; and identifying the objects in the smoke-filled structure from the one or more light stripes.
