In some embodiments, inventory holders are used to store data storage devices used by a data storage system. When data is to be transacted with the data storage devices, mobile drive units locate appropriate inventory holders and transport them to a device reading station, where an appropriate device retrieval unit transacts the data. In some embodiments, each inventory holder includes a heterogenous mix of data storage device types, the layout of which may be calculated according to the specific mix allocated to a given inventory holder. After the data has been transacted, the data storage devices are returned to the appropriate inventory holders, and the inventory holders are placed by the mobile drive units in locations where they may be accessed in response to further data transactions.

Robotic enabled lift concepts are described. In one embodiment, a vertical lift includes a vertically directed track assembly and linear actuator that extend between first and second levels. The lift further includes a lift platform having a continuous contact roller such as a continuous belt, for example, a platform guide assembly for engagement with the track assembly, and a motion translation mechanism mechanically coupled between the continuous contact roller and the linear actuator. A robotic drive unit can drive upon and dock with the lift platform. In that docked position, the robotic drive unit can rotate its drive wheels to raise or lower itself between the first and second levels based on the translation of the motive forces of the drive wheels through the motion translation mechanism and to the vertically directed linear actuator. Other embodiments include a lift arm, an inclined track assembly, and a lift carriage.

A mechanical control system can receive manual inputs from a mechanical operation member to operate the vehicle in manual mode. When the actuator is engaged, it operates the vehicle in an autonomous mode, and when disengaged, the vehicle is operated in manual mode. Operating the vehicle in an autonomous mode can include automatically controlling steering, braking, throttle, and transmission. A system may also allow the vehicle to be operated via remote command.
