Methods and systems are provided for split exhaust engine system including a blowdown exhaust manifold coupled to an exhaust passage and a scavenge exhaust manifold coupled to an intake passage. In one example, a turbine wastegate couples a single exhaust runner out of a plurality of exhaust runners of the blowdown exhaust manifold to an exhaust passage, downstream of a turbocharger turbine. Additionally, the turbine wastegate may couple the single exhaust runner to the exhaust passage, downstream of the turbocharger turbine arranged in the exhaust passage.

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, an intake valve timing, exhaust valve timing of a first set of exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold, and a position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve in an EGR passage may be adjusted in coordination with one another in response to a condition at a compressor. The EGR passage may be coupled between the intake passage, upstream of the compressor, and the first exhaust manifold.

Systems and methods for a split exhaust engine system

Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, a flow of exhaust (e.g., exhaust gas recirculation) from engine cylinders to the intake passage, upstream of a compressor, via an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage and the first exhaust manifold may be adjusted by adjusting a timing of a first set of cylinder exhaust valves coupled to the first exhaust manifold. Additionally, the first set of cylinder exhaust valves open at a different time than a second set of cylinder exhaust valves coupled to the exhaust passage.

Systems and methods for operating a twin scroll turbocharged engine with a junction configured to selectively control exhaust gas delivery to an exhaust gas recirculation system and a twin scroll turbine are provided.

Methods and systems are provided for varying a proportion of compressed air recirculated to a compressor inlet from a location downstream of the compressor and upstream of a charge air cooler and a location downstream of the charge air cooler. A temperature-controlled compressor recirculation flow is used to reduce condensation from EGR being ingested into the compressor. The temperature-controlled compressor recirculation flow is also used to address compressor surge.

Systems and methods for controlling air flow in an engine including a turbocharger are provided. One example method includes adjusting valve operation for a turbocharged engine. The method may improve scavenging and reduce exhaust blow down interference.

Engine valve duration control for improved scavenging

A method for controlling combustion in a combustion chamber of a turbocharged engine is described. The method includes admitting to the combustion chamber prior to ignition a first amount of exhaust from an intake manifold of the engine, the first amount changing at a first rate in response to a changing engine load. The method also includes retaining in the combustion chamber prior to the ignition a second amount of exhaust from the combustion chamber, the second amount changing at a second rate, greater than the first rate, in response to the changing engine load.

Internal and external LP EGR for boosted engines

A system and method to control valve timing and valve lift of an engine is described. The intake valve timing can be retarded while the valve is in a low lift or high lift mode. The method can lower engine friction and reduce fuel consumption, at least under some conditions.

System and method for improved cam retard

A four-stroke cycle reciprocating internal combustion engine includes a piston mounted for reciprocal movement within a power cylinder and primary and secondary intake valves. The primary valve has a fixed event, in terms of both duration and lift, and the secondary valve has variable duration and lift. Although the timing of the primary and secondary valve events may be retarded from a standard timing value, both valves close at the same time regardless of the presence of timing retard. The dual event strategy, combined with camshaft timing retard for part load conditions, produces excellent charge motion by staggering the respective lifted flow areas of the primary and secondary valve events and by delaying the secondary valve opening.
