An engine control system for a vehicle includes a shutdown control module that generates a command to shut down an engine of the vehicle when at least one of: a driver requests the shutdown of the engine via an ignition system; and when one or more predetermined conditions are satisfied for shutting down the engine without the driver requesting shutdown of the engine via the ignition system. A valve control module, when the command to shut down the engine is generated, advances an exhaust camshaft phaser based on a predetermined exhaust park position. When the exhaust camshaft phaser is in the predetermined exhaust park position, an exhaust valve of a cylinder is fully closed during an exhaust stroke of the cylinder before a piston of the cylinder reaches a topmost position for a next intake stroke of the cylinder.

An engine control system for an auto-stop/start vehicle includes an auto-stop/start module that generates an auto-stop command for shutting down an engine while an ignition is ON and subsequently generates an auto-start command for re-starting the engine. The system includes an actuator control module that disables an engine load, parks exhaust and intake cam phasers, disables fuel, sets a first throttle opening, monitors a crankshaft rotational position, speed, and deceleration, sets a second throttle opening for a predetermined duration if a piston simultaneously crosses a target position below a target engine speed and below a target degrees of rotation remaining, sets a third throttle opening, and determines if an engine speed is below a threshold speed before setting a fourth throttle opening when the engine speed is below the threshold speed, and causes the piston to rest in a predetermined position range.

Engine stop position control system and method

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a start-stop module, a pre-ignition risk module, and a cooling control module. The start-stop module stops and restarts an engine independent from an input received from an ignition system. The pre-ignition risk module monitors a risk of pre-ignition when the engine is restarted and generates a signal based on the risk of pre-ignition. The cooling control module controls a cooling system to circulate coolant through the engine when the engine is stopped in response to the risk of pre-ignition.

System and method for controlling a cooling system of an engine equipped with a start-stop system

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a stop-start module and a throttle control module. The stop-start module stops an engine when a driver depresses a brake pedal while an ignition system is on and the engine is idling. The throttle control module selectively opens a throttle valve when fuel injection in the engine is stopped while the ignition system is on based on engine speed and a manifold pressure within an intake manifold. The stop-start module starts the engine when the driver releases the brake pedal.

System and method for preventing misfire during engine startup

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a stop-start module and a fuel control module. The stop-start module stops an engine and thereby interrupts an engine cycle when a driver depresses a brake pedal while an ignition system is on and the engine is idling. The stop-start module restarts the engine when the driver releases the brake pedal. The fuel control module, when the engine is restarted, selectively injects fuel into a cylinder of the engine as the cylinder completes the interrupted engine cycle based on an amount of crankshaft rotation corresponding to a difference between a position of a piston in the cylinder when the piston is stopped and top dead center.

An auto ignition mitigation system comprises a piston position module that determines a position of a piston within a cylinder and a temperature module that determines a first temperature of air within the cylinder. A fuel enrichment module communicates with the piston position module and the temperature module and determines a first fuel quantity based on the first temperature and the position of the piston. A fuel control module communicates with the fuel enrichment module and provides the first fuel quantity to the cylinder after the engine is started and before a first exhaust stroke of the piston.

Auto-ignition mitigation system

A control system for an engine includes a position determination module and a position control module. The position determination module determines a first cam phaser position for starting the engine prior to engine shut down, and determines a second cam phaser position for starting the engine while the engine is shut down. The position control module adjusts a cam phaser to the first cam phaser position at engine shut down. The position control module adjusts the cam phaser from the first cam phaser position to the second cam phaser at engine start up when a difference between the first cam phaser position and the second cam phaser position is greater than a predetermined difference. A method for controlling an engine is also provided.

The drive diagnostic module determines a load energy of an accessory drive system of the vehicle and determines a slip percentage of a belt of the accessory drive system based on an engine speed and a motor speed. The hybrid control module determines a requested motor torque based on at least one of the load energy and the slip percentage. The control module controls a motor of the vehicle based on the requested motor torque.

An HEV having a regenerative braking capability includes a friction braking system adapted to selectively apply an OFBT to slow the HEV in one manner, an energy storage system (ESS), an electric motor/generator, and a controller having a braking control algorithm or method. The method anticipates an impending let up in the RBT based on a plurality of vehicle performance values including a threshold vehicle speed, and selectively activates the friction braking system to apply the OFBT when the impending let up in the RBT is greater than a threshold.

A control module of a vehicle comprises a drive diagnostic module and a power determination module. The drive diagnostic module determines a slip power of a belt based on engine speed, motor speed, and motor torque. The power determination module determines an accumulated power of the belt based on the slip power, the motor speed, and the motor torque. The control module diagnoses a condition of the belt based on the accumulated power.

A monitoring system for a catalytic converter is provided. A two stage orifice between the condenser and the evaporator of the air conditioning system slows the equilibration of the pressures on the high pressure side and low pressure side of the air conditioning system when the air conditioner compressor is turned off, allowing the passenger cabin to continue receiving cooling air even when the gasoline engine, and thus the compressor, is off. An auxiliary engine coolant pump circulates heated engine coolant through the heater core when the gasoline engine is turned off, thus providing heat when conditions require passenger cabin heating.
