An adjustable fence for orienting a plate joiner having a body and a rotating generally planar cutter to cut an arcuate slot in a workpiece is disclosed. The fence comprises a base, a handle and fastening means. The base is shiftably affixed to the plate joiner body and has a planar surface forming a first fence oriented generally perpendicular to the plane of the cutter. The base also has a guideway parallel to the first fence. The handle is movably adjustably affixed to the base and has a grip portion adapted to cooperate with a hand of an operator and a planar surface forming a second fence forming an angle relative to the first fence. The handle cooperates with the base guideway enabling the second fence to be adjusted along a guideway axis parallel to the first fence relative to the planar cutter. The handle is pivotal about a transverse axis parallel to the first and second fences to vary the angle of the second fence relative to the first fence. The fastening means selectively fastens the handle to the base in a desired location.

Circular saw or the like

A motor assembly including a unitary member which functions as a combined armature shaft bearing support and brush tube holder. The member is a molded plastic piece which has two legs extending from a bearing support portion and straddling the commutator and armature shaft of the motor for attachment to the motor field assembly. Ledges are formed in the legs to hold the brush tubes, which have lanced projections cooperating with notches formed in the legs for precisely locating the brush tubes and preventing longitudinal movement thereof. To clamp the brush tubes to the ledges, shoulders are provided adjacent the ledges and tabs straddling the brush tubes and the shoulders are secured by screws which pass through the tabs and into the shoulders. In order to accommodate different size brush tubes, different height shoulders are provided on opposite sides of the ledges. In addition, the legs are open at both ends of the ledges to accommodate different lengths of brush tubes.

A mechanism for adjusting the angle of the base of a circular saw relative the saw blade includes an adjustment bracket having an elongated adjustment aperture which extends over both ranges of angular adjustment. For the first range, the aperture follows a first circular arc at a first radial distance from the pivot axis of the base relative the housing and for the second range the aperture follows a second circular arc at a second radial distance from the pivot axis.

A power driven reciprocating blade hedge trimmer includes a speed-reducing gear train with a sun gear, a plurality of planet gears, and a surrounding hollow drum-like orbiting gear element that seals in gear train lubricant and is formed to have an outer peripheral sinuous groove serving as a cam. A pin-engaging, guided, reciprocating cutting blade element of the hedge trimmer is driven by engagement of the pin and the groove shaped cam to produce reciprocating cutting motion aligned with the axis of the rotating power source. Resilient damping elements are affixed to an end of a blade supporting element where it is held by the hand-held portion of the device, to attenuate and isolate undesirable vibrational feedback generated during reciprocation of the cutting blade element.

A portable power tool including a power unit housing having first and second housing segments joined together in clam shell fashion includes a tool head which is mounted to extend forwardly from the power unit housing by means of a bearing plate provided with tapped holes for reception of screws extending through the tool head. The bearing plate is contained entirely within the interior of the power unit housing, to avoid external seams by means of a clamping flange defining the forwardmost extent of the first and second housing segments. The bearing plate is formed with plural auxiliary handle mounts projecting from openings formed in the first and second housing segments for reception of auxiliary handles. The mounts are adjacent vents in the housing segments, promoting cooling of the bearings during operation.

A bearing and bearing mount comprising an adjustable combined sleeve and thrust bearing which may be adjusted during assembly for endwise positioning which is of generally top-hat configuration having a generally cylindrical sleeve bearing portion and a generally laterally outwardly extending annular rim-like portion providing a thrust bearing face generally perpendicular the axis of the sleeve bearing portion, the rear face of the rim-like portion being provided with a cam or ramp surface which rises progressively relative the front or thrust bearing face in a direction generally parallel the longitudinal axis of the sleeve bearing portion together with a saddle strap having a semi-cylindrical central portion adapted to engage the sleeve bearing portion and so fit against the sleeve portion of the bearing as to prevent it from rotating therewithin and provided with a cam or ramp surface that mates with and is adapted to engage the cam or ramp surface of the combined sleeve and thrust bearing so that relative rotation of the bearing beneath the strap will provide a camming action so as to move the bearing and, therefore, the thrust face thereof longitudinally relative the mounting strap and right-angle sander/polisher incorporating same.
