A method of controlling the growth of microorganisms by applying to them or to their habitat an imidazoline represented by the formula ##STR1## where R can be hydrogen or methyl, R.sup.1 can be hydrogen, or alkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 can be hydrogen or methyl, R.sup.3 can be alkyl of 6-10 carbon atoms and x is 1 or 2.

A method of controlling the growth of microorganisms by applying to them or to the environment inhabited by them a compound represented by the formula ##STR1## where R can be hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and x is 1 or 2.

Method of controlling the growth of microorganisms

A composition consisting essentially of tris(hydroxymethyl)nitromethane and about an equal part of a mixture consisting of 4-(2-nitrobutyl)morpholine and 4,4-(2-ethyl-2-nitromethylene)dimorpholine in a ratio of about 3.5:1 respectively. The composition is useful as an antimicrobial.
