Systems and methods for optimizing detection of optical signals indicating the presence of an analyte of interest in a blood sample are described. In one aspect, a blood culture test vial having a sensor is inoculated with the blood sample, light at an excitation frequency of the sensor is transmitted to the test vial, an intensity of a plurality of fluorescence signals emitted from the test vial is measured, and the plurality of measured fluorescence signals are normalized using by a reference signal that is not dependent on a measured intensity of a fluorescence signal emitted from the test vial. In another aspect, a measurement system measures fluorescence signals from one or more reference vials performing in extreme pH conditions. Fluorescence signals emitted from test vials inoculated with samples under test are measured and compared to the signals measured from the one or more reference vials to address or mitigate variability in hardware components of the measurement system.

A glycemic management related analyte detecting assay device () and method are provided for detecting and quantifying analyte concentrations in a fluid sample. The assay device includes an absorbent body containing an assay forming a detection zone for receiving a fluid test sample. The absorbent body is provided in a chamber of the device. The assay can detect one or more of a glycemic analyte selected from the group consisting of fasting plasma blood glucose, oral glucose, % glycated hemoglobin, and fasting insulin concentrations. In one embodiment, a container includes an absorbent body having a plurality of superimposed membranes () where each membrane contains a reactant and a color indicator for detecting the presence of a selected analyte above a predetermined concentration in the fluid sample. The absorbent body and/or the assay include a color indicator that is able to provide a visual indication of the presence of one or more glycemic analytes present in the test sample.

An insulin delivery device () includes a cannula () for delivering insulin to a patient at an infusion site, a pump assembly (), and a valve () for controlling the flow of insulin. A removable leak detector unit () is coupled to the delivery device for sensing and detecting leakage of insulin at the infusion site. The leak detector unit () has electrodes () positioned for contacting the insulin leaking from the infusion site, a sensing electrical circuit () and a power source () for operating the leak detector unit. The removable leak detector unit () has an electrical contact () for mating with an electrical contact () of the delivery device for electrically and operatively connecting the leak detector unit () to the delivery device. The leak detector unit () sends a signal to the pump assembly () and/or valve () to stop the flow of insulin when leakage is detected at the infusion site.
