A fire resistant barrier and system for dynamic building expansion joints comprising a plurality of layers of fire resistant material comprising: a first mechanical support layer having a first and second major surface; a second layer having a first and second major surface, wherein the second layer provides protection and mechanical support to the fire barrier; and at least one layer of intumescent sheet material having a first and second major surface; said at least one layer of intumescent material is disposed between said first mechanical support layer and said second layer; and wherein said first mechanical support layer, said second layer and said at least one layer of intumescent material are locally bonded together over only a portion of their width substantially continuously along the length of the layers of said fire resistant material. The fire barrier is secured to concrete building members with retainer angle brackets and does not require the use of conventional caulking materials to effect a tight seal between the building structure and the fire barrier.

A fire resistant gasket for architectural joints comprises an intumescent material mat having a first major surface and a second major surface, wherein at least one of said first and second major surfaces has coated thereon an adhesive. A fire barrier is provided comprising: at least one fire resistant intumescent gasket material having a first major surface and a second major surface, wherein at least one of said first and second major surfaces has coated thereon an adhesive, and at least one fire resistant material barrier layer bonded to a portion of one of said first and second major surface, preferably adhered to a portion of said adhesive coated gasket surface. A process for installing a building joint fire barrier comprises providing at least one fire resistant intumescent gasket material having a first major surface and a second major surface, wherein at least one of said first and second major surfaces has coated thereon an adhesive, adhering the gasket material to at least one of a building member and a fire resistant material barrier layer, and affixing the fire resistant material barrier layer to the building member with the gasket material interposed therebetween.

A refractory glass fiber having a use temperature of greater than 1000.degree. C., up to at least 1260.degree. C., having an after service mechanical integrity comparable to conventional refractory ceramic fiber and which is non-durable in physiological fluids, consisting essentially of the product of silica, magnesia and optionally zirconia, is produced from a melt, optionally containing a viscosity modifier.

Composition and process for the preparation of high temperature stable continuous glass fibers with an upper temperature use limit of 2300.degree. F. are provided. The compositional formulation, in mole percent, is 62-85% SiO.sub.2, 10-20% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 5-15% MgO, 0.5-5% TiO.sub.x, and 0-5% ZrO.sub.2. The continuous fibers are prepared by an economical direct melt method, and demonstrate high tensile strength, high Young's modulus, and low linear thermal shrinkage characteristics. Friction pads containing these high temperature stable continuous glass fibers are also provided.

A high strength ceramic fiber board having a green strength of at least 300 psi and a green density of less than about 22 lb/ft.sup.3 ; and having a composition comprising 65-97.5% wt. ceramic fiber, 1-10% wt. PVA fiber, 0.5-10% wt. cationic starch, 0-25% wt. clay filler and 1.0-15% wt. colloidal silica.
