A method for automatically determining the acceptability of an input image for a predetermined output operation, such as printing, includes the steps of: (a) identifying one or more important areas in the input image; (b) calculating a salient acceptability feature for each of the important areas; (c) determining the acceptability of the input image from the salient acceptability features of the important areas; and (d) implementing the predetermined output operation based on the acceptability of the input image determined in step (c).

Method for automatically determining the acceptability of a digital image

An apparatus and method is provided for dynamically modifying both the luminance and contrast of an image as it is displayed on a display unit in response to changing lighting conditions. Sensors are utilized to continually measure the luminance of the light illuminating the display unit and the display surround luminance. Measurement signals generated by the light sensors are processed to provide display luminance and contrast adjustment control signals that gradually cause the adjustment of the display unit's luminance and contrast in response thereto. Continual adjustment of the luminance and contrast of a display unit according to changing lighting conditions such that the brightness and contrast perception of the displayed image remains constant under the varying conditions. As a result, a number of advantages our obtained including: the brightness and contrast perception of images displayed on a display unit remains constant as the display device illumination changes; the brightness and contrast perception of images displayed on a display unit remains constant as the display unit surround luminance changes; and power consumption is decreased in dim environments.

A scene balance correction method for a digital imaging device, including the steps of determining a low-resolution image from an input image in an input color space; applying a color transformation to convert the low-resolution image to a standard color space to form a standard color space low-resolution image; analyzing the standard color space low-resolution image to determine a set of standard color space scene balance correction factors; determining a set of corresponding input color space scene balance correction factors from the standard color space scene balance correction factors using the color transformation; and applying the corresponding input color space scene balance correction factors to the input image to form a corrected input image.

Method for automatic scene balance of digital images

A method for reducing a bit depth of an image to reduce storage memory, the method comprises the steps of creating a histogram of an image; modifying the histogram so that a maximum slope of a to-be-calculated cumulative histogram will be no greater than substantially 1.0; (c) calculating the cumulative histogram from the modified histogram; and (d) interpreting the cumulative histogram to give a desired bit depth reduction.
