Composite laminate interlayers for adhering a glass laminate comprising a sheet of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) between layers of plasticized polyvinyl butyral (PVB) adhesive layers, wherein at least one of the PVB adhesive layers is stiffened, e.g. by reduction in the amount of plasticizer, and has a glass transition temperature greater than 35&#xb0; C. The PET is preferably 0.075 to 0.25 mm (3-10 mils) thick and can have a functional coating for reducing radiation, e.g. UV or IR or visible light, transmission through the glass laminate. The laminate can also comprise at least one elastomeric layer adapted to reducing sound transmission through the glass laminate. The laminates exhibit enhanced maximum flexural modulus of greater than about 350 Newtons/centimeter.

Intrusion resistant glass laminates

Composite laminate interlayers for adhering a glass laminate comprising two sheets of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) between layers of plasticized polyvinyl butyral (PVB) adhesive layers, wherein the two PET layers provide increased stiffness for the laminate without sacrificing the optical clarity of the laminate.

This invention provides an embossed decorative composite laminate interlayer for use in reducing UV and IR energy transmittance through a glass laminate. One interlayer of the present invention comprises an embossed decorative composite disposed between a first and second adhesive layer, such as PVB. The embossed decorative composite of the present invention comprises a first polymeric support film, such as PET, having a metal coating disposed thereon, thereby forming a metallized film. The metallized film is then bonded through the use of an adhesive to a second polymer support film, forming a decorative composite structure. The decorative composite is then purposefully embossed such that they have protrusions at different angles to the flat plane of the bonded polymeric support films, so as to form the desired embossed decorative composite.

Embossed reflective laminates

A composite interlayer suitable for using laminated glass includes a layer of plasticized polyvinyl butyral sandwiched between second and third polymeric layers. In a preferred embodiment, at least one and preferably both of the second and third layers are less than 5 mils thick and formed of polyurethane.

Laminates are disclosed having interlayers containing an infrared absorbing amount of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB) coated on or dispersed in a thermoplastic polymeric matrix. Preferably, the LaBis combined with other materials, such as indium tin oxide, antimony tin oxide, organic dyes or pigments in a polymeric matrix of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). Alternatively, LaBis coated on a sheet of polyethylene terephthalate and encapsulated with one or more sheets of PVB. The interlayers having LaBdispersed therein or coated thereon are advantageously combined with encapsulation layers, reflective layers, dyed layers and/or pigmented layers.

Infrared absorbing compositions and laminates

This invention is directed to a plastic composite comprising color images printed onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using thermal transfer (TT) printing technology. The PET layer is then bonded to a second PET layer using a thermally activated adhesive, preferably ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The bonded PET layers are then disposed between two layers of plasticized PVB, forming the plastic composite. The plastic composite can then be placed between two sheets of glass forming the final laminated glass product.

A no autoclave process for forming a safety laminate which involves interposing a plasticized polyvinyl butyral sheet having a water content of 0.2 weight percent or more between a pair of glass layers to form a laminate assembly, enclosing at least the edges of the assembly in a sealed space, subjecting the sealed space to vacuum to deair the laminate assembly, heating the deaired laminate assembly to a temperature sufficient to seal the edges of the glass layers and plasticized polyvinyl butyral sheet and then subjecting the laminate assembly to a temperature and for a time sufficient to bond the glass layers to the sheet while reducing the vacuum to an extent effective to counteract water bubble formation in the sheet to form a safety laminate meeting the American National Standards Code for Safety Glazing Materials.

No autoclave process for forming a safety glass laminate

A process for forming a shaped prelaminate of glass and plastic by a) drawing an assembly of plastic layers against a hot, contoured, e.g. of compound curvature, mold surface to provide a shaped plastic preform at elevated temperature; b) transferring the shaped preform without cooling to an adjacent unheated glass layer of substantially matching surface contour to heat bond the shaped plastic preform to the glass layer; and then c) removing heat from the shaped plastic preform via conductive heat transfer to the glass layer to form the shaped prelaminate of glass and plastic layers. A bilayer glazing panel is formed in a conventional unmodified autoclave bonding system by exposing the prelaminate to elevated temperature and pressure to firmly bond the plastic to the glass.

A laminate which is substantially free of distortion when used in a safety glazing comprising a transparent, thermoplastic substrate layer, optionally surface treated or coated to improve adhesion, bearing one or more functional performance layers, such as an infra-red radiation reflecting stack, and at least one layer of plasticized polyvinyl butyral bonded on one side to a functional performance layer or the substrate layer having a roughened deairing surface on its other side characterized by a roughness value, Rz, of at least 10 micrometers, such plasticized polyvinyl butyral layer, before bonding to the substrate layer or functional performance layer, possessing low surface waviness on each side characterized by a wave index value, WI, of less than 15,000 square micrometers.

Laminate for a safety glazing

A polymeric laminate for use with a glass layer in a laminated bilayer or anti-lacerative shield application comprises a first layer of moisture tolerant plasticized polyvinyl butyral containing (a) adhesion control agent(s) and (b) residual hydroxyl content which optimize glass adhesion and optical performance over a range of moisture contents in the first layer likely to be encountered in use, i.e. 0.2 to 0.5 weight % and 2 to 2.8 weight %, such first layer being in face to face contact with a second layer of a clear polymer film or coating having a combination of performance properties desirable for these applications. Preferred second layers are biaxially stretched polyester and thermoset aliphatic polyurethane.

The polyblend comprises a matrix terpolymer of monovinylidene aromatic, ethylenically unsaturated nitrile and acrylate monomers blended with a graft copolymer having superstrate polymers of monovinylidene aromatic and ethylenically unsaturated monomers on a substrate of a diene rubber.

Transparent ABS polyblends

The polymeric polyblend comprises a matrix terpolymer of alkenyl aromatic, alkenyl nitrile and acrylate monomers blended with a grafted block copolymer rubber as dispersed rubber particles, said particles being grafted with and having occluded terpolymer of substantially the same composition of said matrix phase. The polyblend is a product of a mass polymerization process having superior toughness and transparency.
