A rotary wing aircraft bearing that provides a constrained relative motion between a first rotary wing aircraft member and a second rotary wing aircraft member. The bearing includes an elastomeric mold bonded laminated bearing stack, the elastomeric mold bonded laminated bearing stack including a plurality of mold bonded alternating layers of nonelastomeric shim member layers and elastomeric shim members layers, the alternating layers having an exterior surface and an interior center distal from the exterior surface. At least one of the elastomeric shim members layers has an interior elastomer region distal from the exterior surface, the interior elastomer region formed an interior cured elastomer composition having at least a first interior optical characteristic ingredient, and an exterior elastomer region encompassing the interior elastomer region, the exterior elastomer region proximate the exterior surface, the exterior elastomer region formed from an exterior cured elastomer composition having at least a second exterior optical characteristic ingredient, the at least second exterior optical characteristic ingredient different than the interior cured elastomer composition first interior optical characteristic ingredient, wherein with an elastomer void crack propagating from the exterior surface inward towards the interior elastomer region and a repeated rotary wing aircraft relative motion between the first rotary wing aircraft member and the second rotary wing aircraft member generates a plurality of interior cured elastomer composition crumbs to be expelled from the elastomer void, the interior cured elastomer composition crumbs optically distinguishable from the exterior cured elastomer composition.

Rotary wing aircraft bearing for rotary wing aircraft motions

A wear-indicating bearing and method of detecting wear in a bearing are disclosed. The bearing includes a bearing stack having a first end and a second end with a longitudinal axis defined between the first and second ends. The bearing stack includes a plurality of elastomeric layers sandwiched between non-elastomeric shim layers, where each layer is concentric about the longitudinal axis. At least one elastomeric layer is a marker layer configured to indicate wear of the bearing. The marker layer is made up of a first elastomeric composition and a second elastomeric composition, wherein the first and second elastomeric compositions have optically different characteristics. Upon fatigue of the bearing, the first elastomeric composition is detectable through a fracture extending from an exterior surface of the bearing stack.

Elastomer coating composition are disclosed which cure at room temperature, and form highly flex-resistant, durable, and flexible protective layer on elastomers and provides excellent adhesion to elastomeric and metal substrates. The coating is a solvent solution of (A) a carboxylated hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, and (B) a room temperature isocyanate curing component. Coated bonded elastomer-metal composites are obtained without an additional application of heat to cure the coating.

Surface preparation of rubber for coatings or bonding

The present invention provides an ambient temperature curable coating and coated articles therefrom in a rubbery, high elongation, weatherable coating composition which can be applied to flexible elastomeric substrates for a variety of purposes. Depending on the film forming polymer used in the composition, it may be used to provide resistance to ozone, oils and solvents, or the coating may be applied for the purposes of enhancing the cosmetic appearance of the substrate rubber. The curable coating mixture is a mixture of two parts, one part containing a solution of a functional film forming polymer, and the other part providing the curing component. The stability as a premixed, one-part solution is limited to up to several months. The curable film former and curing component are mixed together at an overall 4% to 25% solids content. The viscosity is less than 20,000 cps (Brookfield) such that the coating can be sprayed, brushed or dipped to form thin coatings of from 0.001-0.020 mils.

Ambient cured coatings and coated rubber products therefrom

The coating composition of the invention cures at room temperature, and forms a coating which is resistant to flex-fatigue. environmental temperature variability and provides for excellent adhesion to flexible elastomeric substrates. The coating in two parts comprises (A) a graft-modified fluoroelastomer and (B) a curing component containing at least one group reactive with an active hydrogen bearing group, such as an isocyanate group and another group which forms crosslinks, and (C) a solvent. The coating is prepared by mixing and milling the fluoroelasomer which has been graft-functionalized with an active hydrogen bearing group groups. The first part is admixed with the second part prior to applying the coating. Gelation of the coating takes place at room temperature over several hours with complete cure taking place within about 24 hours.

A composite shim is provided having a laminate structure that includes a composite layer having at least one circumferential fiber. The composite layer may be in combination with composite layers with radially oriented fibers, uniaxially oriented fibers, and/or biaxially extending fibers. By employing such laminate structures, the present invention may provide shims that have the desired strength and stiffness characteristics of metallic shims while possessing the beneficial weight characteristics generally associated with composite shims. Laminated bearings containing such composite shims are also provided.

The coating compounds can be applied to an substrate either before or after the substrate has been vulcanized. The coatings can be cured at ambient temperatures and provide heat dissipation over long term service at elevated temperatures.
