A multi-functional tool that is particularly useful for in-field service and maintenance of a chainsaw, the tool having a handle section and a head section, wherein the handle section includes a plurality of tubular openings adapted to receive a multiplicity of repair tools, such as a chain file, depth gauge, screwdriver, wrench tool, etc., without requiring the removal of all other tools. The head section includes a pair of spaced-apart spikes to allow the tool to be secured to a wooden structure, such as a tree stump and a clamp to secure the chainsaw while service or maintenance is performed. The multi-functional chainsaw field maintenance tool further includes a device to facilitate transport of the multi-functional tool, such as a belt clip, shoulder strap or magnetic attachment device.

An elongated metallic strip is provided which has oppositely disposed convolutions constituted by sinuosities, corrugations, nodes, or the like, and said convolutions are constituted by nadir and zenith convolutions. Provided on the nadir and zenith convolutions are cooperative hinge and locating means assisting in the juxtaposition of said nadir and zenith convolutions to one another, said integral hinge means being provided thereon to facilitate the disposition of such strip into a helical configuration. A seal is provided which is created by helically winding the strip to locate edges thereof in a cylindrical sealing configuration by juxtaposing the convolutions of the strip in operative relationship with one another and welding said convolutions to one another. The method of fabricating the aforesaid seal includes the progressive deformation of the metallic strip into a helical configuration with successive convolutions of said strip having juxtaposed zenith and nadir portions whose juxtaposition is facilitated by the provision of the cooperative locating and hinge means thereupon and the subsequent step of welding the juxtaposed zenith and nadir portions of the strip together. This invention relates to a honeycomb core strip, a seal fabricated from said honeycomb core strip and the method of fabricating said seal. It also relates to a flat configured panel fabricated from said core strip. Although the invention will be described as utilized to fabricate seals for use in jet engines, steam turbines and the like, the teachings of the invention can be applied with equal cogency in other applications and it is not intended, by disclosing the use of the invention in a particular application, to limit the use thereof.

Honeycomb seal structure

An apparatus for forming honeycomb-type core strip includes a source of metallic ribbon, form gears for forming a desired configuration in the ribbon and take-up means for taking up the core strip as it is issued from the form gears. Interposed between the source and take-up means is lubricating means for insuring adequate lubrication of the metallic ribbon as it enters the bite of the form gears. The form gears are characterized by a configuration which enables them to impart hinge means to the ribbon which facilitates the utilization of the ribbon in unitary metallic seal constructions wherein a continuous length of the ribbon is bent into helical form.

Apparatus for fabricating honeycomb core strip

An apparatus is provided for forming a circular, honeycomb-type engine seal from pre-formed core strip having male and female nodes. The apparatus includes a source of strip and means for forming the strip into a circular seal configuration wherein the male and female nodes of the strip are automatically juxtaposed to each other for weldment as relative movement between the forming means and the source occurs to withdraw additional strip from the core strip source. As the relative movement continues, the juxtaposed male and female nodes are exposed to welding head means of the apparatus which welds the male and female nodes to one another. The forming means includes means for causing said relative movement constituted by drive means which is adjustable to permit forming means of different sizes to be utilized. The movement of the forming means permits successive layers or laminae of the strip to be welded to each other in circular form until a seal of the desired dimension is achieved. The method of the invention involves the step of simultaneously welding a plurality of male and female nodes which are juxtaposed to each other, and the additional step of welding pairs of nodes which are interspersed between previously welded pairs and the further step of utilizing the welding of a selected pair of nodes as a signal for the simultaneous weldment of additional pairs.

Method and apparatus for fabricating honeycomb seal

A task lighting assembly having a task lighting fixture secured in overlying relationship with respect to a work station, a building wall member disposed adjacent to the lighting fixture and adjacent to the work station and the lighting fixture having an upper wall, a front wall depending from the upper wall and an inwardly projecting lower wall projecting from the front wall. At least one light source receiving recess is defined between the walls. A light discharging opening is disposed between the lower wall and the building wall member. The lower wall is of sufficient length so that no significant portion of the light emitted by a light source in the recess will travel directly downwardly to illuminate the work station. The fixture preferably has no lens. The work station is illuminated primarily through reflected radiation. The undersurface of the upper wall preferably has a reflectance of at least about 80 percent. A task lighting fixture suitable for use in the above-described assembly.

A panel includes metallic face sheets maintained in operative relationship with each other by a metallic core structure. The core structure consists of a plurality of securement core strips which may be internested or juxtaposed to provide a honeycomb core configuration. Structural integrity is created by the provision of internally generated welds which fasten securement portions of the core strips in operative relationship with the face sheets, but which can be terminated inwardly of the outer surfaces of the face sheets resulting in a very small volume of face sheet material being cast into a weld nugget and being heat affected and maintaining the integrity of the face sheets while, nevertheless, providing maximum structural strength and eliminating face sheet thickness limitations. Also disclosed is a method of fabricating the metallic panel which includes the steps of internally generating the weldments so that, by minimum pressure and minimum energy, discrete welds are formed which fasten the securement portions of the core strips in operative relationship with the face sheets while greatly reducing the dimensions of the weld nuggets in comparison with the nuggets which result from the utilization of prior art external welding techinques.

The machine includes a first welding head which is insertable in the space between the face sheets and has welding electrode means thereupon which internally weld securement portions of the core strips to adjacent inner surfaces of face sheets of any desired thickness. The welding head includes movable jaws mounting the welding electrodes to move the welding electrodes into engagement with the securement portions of the core strips and the welding electrodes are resilient to permit them to move independently of the movable jaws and each electrode provides an electrically isolated weld. A second welding head is provided which is capable of securing web portions of the core strips by weldments to one another after the weldment of the core strips at their securement portions has been accomplished by the first welding head. Various adjustments and indexing mechanisms permit the machine to fabricate panels of different dimensions and different size core without the necessity for the extensive down-time necessitated by the utilization of prior art machines.
