An apparatus for bonding two substrates includes a first roller, a second roller that forms a nip with the first roller, a substrate transport configured to move the first substrate and a second substrate through the nip simultaneously, and a controller. The controller operates the substrate transport to move the first substrate and the second substrate through the nip simultaneously, with a pattern of a hydrophobic material on a first side of the first substrate engaging a first side of the second substrate. The first substrate engages the first roller, which has a higher temperature than the second roller, and the hydrophobic material penetrates the first and second substrates to bond the substrates together.

System and method for forming bonded substrates

A computer-based apparatus, including: a memory element storing computer readable instructions; a processor; and a source element to expel a first plurality of drops of a substance with a known density through a medium, and under a set of conditions. The processor executes the computer readable instructions to calculate uncalibrated volumes for the first plurality of drops using respective images of drops in the first plurality of drops. The source element expels a second plurality of drops of the first substance through the medium, and under the first conditions. The processor executes the computer readable instructions to: calculate, using a weight for the second plurality of drops and the known density, actual volumes for the second plurality of drops; and generate, using uncalibrated volumes and the actual volumes, an equation to modify the uncalibrated volumes to match the actual volumes.

Apparatus and method for measuring drop volume

An ink jet printhead maintenance system, which can be part of an ink jet printer, for removing ink residue from a printhead faceplate. The printhead maintenance system can include a supply of liquid which can be applied to the ink residue on the printhead faceplate using various techniques, such as those described. The liquid can include a monomer and/or an oligomer. The wet clean system described can be more effective in removing ink residue which can result from certain inks, such as ultraviolet curable gel inks, than previous printhead maintenance techniques.

A substrate characterization device is provided which includes an optical sensor module and a processor. The optical sensor module includes a light emitting source and a light receiving detector for communicating with the substrate and providing an indication of the diffusion of light through the substrate. The indication of the diffusion of light through the substrate is a signal provided to a processor in communication with a memory module for making a comparison of the signal generated by the optical sensor module with a reference signal to determine the quality of the substrate.

A multi-color imaging apparatus utilizing recharging between two image creation steps for recharging a charge retentive surface to a predetermined potential prior to forming a second of the two images. The two images are formed using toner particles which are subject to under color splatter (UCS). The UCS phenomena occurs when a developed image passes through a toner cloud created by a certain type of scavengeless development system. The forgoing problem is obviated by applying pressure to toner images in combination with recharging thereof prior to their passage through a developer housing.

In a multi-color imaging apparatus utilizing a recharge step between two image creation steps, a corona generating device is used to recharge the developed image areas and untoned areas of a charge retentive surface to a lower electrical potential than that associated with the developed image areas before recharge, so that the residual voltage associated with the developed image is substantially reduced and a minimal level of negative charge is driven through the toner layer(s). An electrical charge associated with any previously developed images is substantially neutralized prior to development of any subsequent images thereon.

Single positive recharge method and apparatus for color image formation

Corona generating devices, and printing machines which use such devices, which include a shell, a plurality of corona wires within the shell, and a power source which outputs first and second alternating voltages which are out-of-phase with each other. The plurality of corona wires are interconnected so as to form two groups of wires. The wires in the first group are operatively connected to the first alternating voltage and the wires in the second group are operatively connected to the second alternating voltage. The corona wires are located within the shell such that wires of the first group are adjacent wires of the second group, and such that wires of the second group are adjacent wires of the first group. The corona generating device beneficially includes a metallic screen which acts as a grid and which controls the corona flow from the corona generating device.
