Compounds containing both photoinitiator moieties and adhesion promoting moieties and coating formulations containing them are disclosed, in particular, durable UV cured primer layers for coil coatings. One embodiment includes a coated metal surface which comprises a metal substrate with at least one surface immediately adjacent to a coating layer comprising a photoinitiator chemically bound to an adhesion promoter is disclosed.

Sterically hindered hydroxy substituted alkoxyamine stabilizer compounds are made water compatible via certain backbones with affinity towards water. The sterically hindered amines are for example of formulae (5)-(7) These compounds are particularly effective in stabilizing aqueous polymer systems against the deleterious effects of oxidative, thermal and actinic radiation. The compounds are effective for example in stabilizing water borne coatings, aqueous inks, aqueous ink jet media and photocured aqueous systems.

Sterically hindered N-hydrocarbyloxyamines are prepared from hindered amine N-oxyl compounds by a process which uses hydrogen peroxide or a hydrogen peroxide equivalent, a catalytic amount of a peroxide decomposing transition metal salt, metal oxide, or metal-ligand complex, a hydrocarbon solvent containing no activated hydrogen atoms, and a relatively inert cosolvent. These compounds are useful as thermal and light stabilizers for a variety of organic substrates.

Hydrogen peroxide catalyzed process for the preparation of sterically hindered N-hydrocarbyloxyamines

Further aspects of the present invention are a process for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the (co)polymers obtainable by this process and the use of multifunctional triazinyl based 2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyls in combination with a free radical initiator, or a multi-functional triazinyl based 2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-ethers for controlled polymerization. In a particularly preferred embodiment at least one additional heating step at a temperature from 140 to 280&deg; C. is applied after polymerization is completed.
