The present invention relates to novel phosphorus-containing compounds with polymeric chains, and methods of making and using the same. In part, subject compositions containing phosphorus-containing compounds with polymeric chains and a therapeutic agent, and methods of making and using the same, are described. Certain of the subject compositions exhibit reverse thermal gelation.

A flowable composition containing a biocompatible, biodegradable, branched thermoplastic polymer is used to form solid matrices such as implants and controlled-release, drug-compositions in a body. The flowable composition with or without bioactive agent can be administered by syringe and needle to form in situ a solid matrix. Alternatively, the flowable composition can be used to form ex vivo solid biodegradable matrices such as articles, implants and devices. The articles implants and the like can then used as solid fasteners, prosthetic devices, and controlled drug compositions.

The present invention provides improved processes for purifying polymer preparations by removing contaminants, such as metal contaminants. The present invention also provides improved processes for producing phosphopolymers, which can yield improved polymers in terms of molecular weight, homogeneity, consistency and purity. Polymers and polymer preparations also are provided. The present invention is time, labor and energy efficient, and thus marks an improvement over past approaches.

A method of making a biodegradable polymeric implant comprising the steps of aseptically mixing at least one monomer with at least one catalyst to form a polymerization mixture, injecting the polymerization mixture into a sterile mold, and polymerizing and/or cross-linking the polymerization mixture in the sterile mold to form a sterilized biodegradable polymeric implant. Additives may be included in the polymerization mixture as needed.
