An electrical motor/generator is provided with at least one of a superconducting rotor, a stator including dovetailed winding dividers, and a stator cooling arrangement with at least one cooling tube per winding slot positioned such that each armature winding is thermally coupled to at least one cooling tube.

Superconducting multi-pole electrical machine

A high power density generator contains an armature structure having a plurality of conductors and at least one heat transfer tube thermally coupled to the conductors. The tube is hollow so as to allow a heat transfer fluid to pass through it. The tube is made of a material having a thermal conductivity &#x3bb; of at least 20 W/mK, an electrical breakdown strength of at least 60 V/mil, and a mechanical strength adequate for handling, manufacturing and operation. In an embodiment of the invention, the tube is made of a ceramic material.

High power density cooling of electrical machines using ceramic tubes of high thermal conductivity

A winding of an electric machine is provided, where the winding includes at least one series of serially connected AC bars. Each AC bar includes a series of serially connected turns formed by litz wire having a plurality of strands, and at least one cooling tube. Individual strands of the plurality of strands are respectively positioned substantially adjacent to the at least one cooling tube at at least one transfer point for providing heat transfer from the respective individual strands to the at least one cooling tube.

AC winding with integrated cooling system and method for making the same

A rotor in a electrical machine comprises a magnetic core having at least two poles, a plurality of winding assemblies, one for each pole, and a damper winding enclosing at least a portion of the magnetic core and winding assemblies. The damper winding has (i) a plurality of electrically conductive rings concentric with a rotational axis of the magnetic core and (ii) a plurality of bars extending parallel to the rotational axis of the magnetic core and connecting to each of the rings. A radially outward surface of each of the bars is connected to a respective radially inner surface of each of the rings. A spindle of the magnetic core has first and second flat surfaces extending perpendicular to a direct axis of the magnetic core. The magnetic core may include first and second projections extending in opposite directions along the quadrature axis.

Optimized drive train for a turbine driven electrical machine

A multi-pole electric machine rotor assembly includes a rotor forging including a rotor body having poles with pole faces and a winding module including a plurality of field windings positioned adjacent the pole faces and winding insulators disposed between each successive pair of the field windings, respectively. A winding block, disposed in engagement with the winding module, is shaped to be shifted to a final position relative to the winding module when the rotor assembly rotates at about its rated speed to thereby compress the winding module. Either the winding block or the winding module can be displaced by centrifugal forces during rotation. In the final position, the winding block is locked by friction in a position to maintain compression in the winding module. The winding block serves to provide a pre-stress in the field windings to keep the field windings tight over the design range of spin speeds, thereby controlling winding position and reducing alternating radial movement.
