An example method is provided in one example embodiment and may include determining a first routing metric associated with a first communication network, wherein the first routing metric identifies a capability of the first communication network to handle an Internet Protocol (IP) flow for a user equipment (UE); determining a second routing metric associated with a second communication network, wherein the second routing metric identifies a capability of the second communication network to handle the IP flow for the UE and wherein the second routing metric is different from the first routing metric; and routing the IP flow for the UE using the first communication network or the second communication network based, at least in part, on the first routing metric and the second routing metric.

An LAA-LTE wireless device obtains data to be transmitted in subframes over a shared spectrum. The wireless device transmits a reservation message over the shared spectrum. The reservation message indicates that an initial synchronization message will be retransmitted a specified number of times at specified intervals, such as with a predetermined number of subframes between each retransmitted synchronization message. The wireless device transmits the initial synchronization message over the shared spectrum.

Synchronization of licensed assisted access long term evolution (LAA-LTE) over shared spectrum

Modifications to frame/subframe structure are presented herein so that a wireless device can transmit its data within a fraction of a subframe. The device obtains data to be transmitted in an unlicensed spectrum and determines whether an entire subframe is required to completely communicate the data. If the data is small enough to not require the entire subframe, then the device generates a burst transmission to minimize the time period of the subframe used to communicate the data. The device transmits the burst transmission and a parameter indicating the duration of the burst transmission.

Methods for long term evolution (LTE) transmission bursts to improve spectral efficiency in unlicensed frequency channels and indoor scenarios

A method is provided for minimizing cross-technology interference with data transmissions from a wireless device in a shared spectrum. The wireless device obtains data to be wirelessly transmitted in a transmission burst in a first radio access technology (RAT) format over a shared spectrum. The wireless device generates a preamble comprising assistance information related to the transmission burst. The preamble comprises a first preamble portion in the first RAT format and a second preamble portion in a second RAT format. The wireless device transmits the preamble followed by the transmission burst.

Minimizing interference in wireless communication

A wireless device accesses a shared spectrum equitably in a self-organizing manner by determining success indices and adjusting courtesy parameters. The wireless device transmits wireless transmissions in a frame subframe structure over a shared spectrum, each of the subframes bounded by subframe boundaries at predetermined time intervals. The success index represents a measure of success in transmitting wireless transmissions in the shared spectrum. The wireless device performs a clear channel assessment to determine whether the shared spectrum is available at the end of the clear channel assessment time interval. The wireless device determines a gap interval between the end of the clear channel assessment time interval and the next subframe boundary and transmits the success index during the gap interval.

Preamble-based channel reservation and self-organized fairness mechanisms for long term evolution (LTE) over shared spectrum

An example method is provided in one example embodiment and may include configuring paging parameters for a group of one or more user equipment (UE) based, at least in part, on a group identifier (ID) for the group of one or more UE; communicating the paging parameters to each of the one or more UE of the group; and paging one or more idle mode UE of the group according to the paging parameters to transition the idle mode UE to a connected mode for receiving a group message. In some instances, configuring the paging parameters can include configuring a paging frame and paging occasion for the group of one or more UE based on the group ID; configuring extended paging cycle radio frames for the group of one or more UE; and/or configuring a paging group Radio Network Temporary Identifier for the group of one or more UE.

Systems and methods are disclosed for using two TDD carriers in the same paired spectrum by offsetting the DL and UL transmissions in frequency to cause the TDD carriers to behave as two half-duplex FDD carriers. DL and UL transmission and reception periods are predefined such that only one of the TDD carriers is transmitting on the DL at any instant in time while the other TDD carrier is transmitting on the UL.

A method of determining a cell border window (CBW) for the small cell, the small cell being underlaid with respect to the macro cell, the small cell having a plurality of attached UEs which are divided into inner cell UEs and border cell UEs, includes determining, at the base station, a difference value based on utilization values of the inner cell UEs and the border cell UEs; and adjusting the CBW based on the difference value and a threshold value.

More particularly, the methodology of the invention provides an elongated virtual Transmission Time Interval (Super TTI) for the first few (in particular, the first) non-compressed packet (that includes upper layer headers) of a packet stream transmitted using ROHC compression. The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling service quality of data communications in a wireless network in which quality of service control for voice over internet protocol packets is provided on a downlink shared channel. A method is provided for a wireless communications between at least a first and a second service user. The method comprises prioritizing transmission of voice over internet protocol packets for the first and second service users over a shared downlink channel based on a first end-to-end delay that the first service user experiences relative to a second end-to-end delay that the second service user experiences. For example, such a priority adaptation may provide quality of service control for voice over internet protocol over a high-speed downlink packet access channel based on an end-to-end delay that a mobile-to-mobile user may be currently experiencing relative to a mobile-to-land user. In this way, a scheduler at a base station of a communications system may maximize use of voice over internet protocol capacity while maintaining an acceptable level of end-to-end delay for different users of mobile stations.

Controlling service quality of voice over Internet Protocol on a downlink channel in high-speed wireless data networks

A method is provided for operating a multi-bandwidth OFDMA system that can achieve an enhanced bandwidth efficiency due to windowing without significantly impacting the underlying physical design of the receive filters. The method comprises establishing a bandwidth over which the radio resources transmit signals, the bandwidth being comprised of an edge-band and a center-band. Narrow band radio resources are assigned to a portion of the bandwidth that is at least partially within the edge-band.

The present invention provides a method of wireless communication involving at least one first uplink channel associated with a first protocol and at least one second uplink channel associated with a second protocol.
