A method and apparatus for applying an article to the interior surface of a flexible package is provided which includes the application of articles to a flexible web of packaging material at a point along a web feed path which minimizes the likelihood of article separation downstream. Specifically, the present method and apparatus includes a driving system for pulling a web of material through a feed path, a tube former having an inlet positioned along the feed path for receiving the web of material and an article applicator for applying articles onto an interior package surface of the web of material at the inlet of the tube former. In this manner, the article is delivered to the web downstream of the upper edge of the tube former thereby minimizing inadvertent separation of the article from the web as experienced in conventional machines as the web passes over the upper edge of the tube former. The present method and apparatus advantageously utilizes a receiving gap formed in the tube former and a guide wall for guiding and assisting in the application of the label as the tube is formed. Accordingly, the present method and apparatus more reliably and accurately apply an article to a web surface and form a package having an interior surface with the article attached thereto.

An apparatus for separating individual items from a bandolier of adjacent items have a seam between the items. A pair of upper jaws and a pair of lower jaws open and close horizontally to clamp and release the respective seam. The pair of lower jaws pull the bandolier downwardly through the opened pair of upper jaws. The seam is cut while the pair of upper jaws close to grasp an adjacent seam. The pair of lower jaws open to release the separated item to a delivery system and the pair of lower jaws move upwardly to be adjacent to, and below, the pair of upper jaws. The pair of lower jaws close and the sequence is repeated. At least one sensor identifies an identification feature on the items and transmits signals to a control unit to actuate movement of the pair of upper jaws and the pair of lower jaws. The labeling machine for dispensing labels from a continuous web of material to a plurality of articles is provided which includes a supply roll of labels, a dispenser for removing the labels from the continuous web, a drive drum for imparting a linear velocity to the web so as to move the web through the labeling machine while accumulating the web into a waste roll, and a driving control system, including a label position sensor, for alternately actuating and deactuating the driving device to move and terminate movement of the web, respectively, through the labeling machine. A web velocity compensator device is provided to compensate for variations in the linear velocity caused by, for example, the increase in the diameter of the waste roll on the drive drum so as to insure proper positioning of each of the labels to be dispensed relative to the dispenser upon deactuation of the driving device. The web compensator device may include a pivotable compensator arm for automatically moving the label position sensor device along the feed path relative to the web in response to an increase in drive drum diameter. Alternatively, web compensator device may include electronically controlling the time delay between sensing the web and stopping of the drive drum by controlling a variable time delay offset prior to deactuating the drive drum.

A label for undersized containers is disclosed, the label having a portion to contact the circumference of the container and portions to overlap and engage themselves. The overlap portion may be releasably attached to that portion of the label which has previously been attached to the container. A label of this nature is used for undersized containers or containers which may be economically reduced now that the information previously displayed on the container may be placed on the label of the present invention.
