A chair construction and method for building a chair having selected features are provided. The construction includes a plurality of interchangeable different components including different base assemblies, back assemblies, seats, arms, and chair controls that can be selected to provide different features on a 'customized' chair. The different chair controls are constructed from a selected one of a plurality of interchangeable energy modules and a selected one of a plurality of interchangeable seat support modules. All components include standardized connections for engaging the related components, and further include various mechanisms and designs so that by selecting particular components, a chair having various features and appearances can be provided. For example, the plurality of interchangeable seat support modules includes a non-adjustable seat support module, a seat-angle-adjustable seat support module, and a seat-depth-adjustable seat support module. Also, the plurality of interchangeable chair control modules include a non-lockable energy module, a back lockable energy module, and a multi-position backstop energy module, each connectable to a selected one of the aforementioned seat support modules. The modularity of these components facilitates assembly including on-site assembly, repair, and post-assembly upgrading of the chair. Further, the seat support is connected by removable pivot pins to allow assembly, retrofit and/or modification in the field. The tension adjustment mechanism, the seat height actuator mechanism, and the pivot connections are constructed for durability, performance, assembleability, compactness of design, and to minimize the number of and complexity of parts. The method includes selecting modules from a menu of interconnectable/interchangeable modules to construct a chair control, and further selecting modules from a menu of interchangeable components to construct a chair having selected features.

A chair construction and method for building a chair having selected features are provided. A chair including a seat support, a seat movably supported on the seat support for movement between a raised position permitting sliding depth adjustment of the seat and a lowered position preventing adjustment, and a detent device for securely holding the seat in the raised position while the seat is being slidable adjusted. A rack is formed integrally on or attached to the bottom of the seat shell. The detent device includes a seat support bracket attached to a top of a chair control, and a pair of moldings attached to opposite sides of the bracket. The moldings each include upwardly facing teeth for selectively engaging the racks to hold the seat in a selected, depth adjusted position. A resilient finger on each molding is adapted to engage a ridge on the seat shell for selectively holding the seat in either a raised position or in a lowered position. The seat shell engages mating structure on the seat support bracket to permit guided sliding of the seat when in the raised position for depth adjustment, and to prevent cocking and twisting of the seat shell during the depth adjustment.

An adjustable chair includes a base, a seat, a back and a chair control for pivotally connecting the back to the base for movement between an upright position and an inclined position. The seat is pivoted to the base at a front end. The seat is also connected to the base by a plurality of locking plates. A spring clamp normally holds the plates in a locked position. The clamp permits pivotal adjustment of the seat with respect to the base. A cable actuated back stop or lock includes a lever pivoted to the back. When in the operative position, the lever contacts the locking plates connected to the seat to limit or prevent tilting of the back with respect to the seat.

A structural support shell for a tilt-back chair has a back portion, a seat portion, and a flexible compression zone extending between the back and seat portions in an integrally molded, one-piece unit. The chair has a base with a recline control and pivoting recline control lever. The seat portion of the shell is fixed to the base and the back portion of the shell is fixed to the recline control lever. The flexible compression zone provides a simplified construction for an ergonomic chair design having an effective axis of rotation between the back portion and seat portion which is located above the seat portion, forward of the back portion, and generally adjacent to the hip joints of a seated user.

A laterally adjustable armrest assembly for a chair includes an armrest support adapted to be secured to the chair. A bracket is joined to an upper end of the armrest support. An armrest member defines a plurality of downwardly opening grooves dimensioned to receive the bracket in selectively adjustable lateral positions.

An arm height adjustment mechanism for a chair of the type having a pair of laterally spaced, fixed armrest supports. The mechanism includes first and second armrests slidably mounted on said supports for vertical movements. A vertical motion translation mechanism interconnects said armrests so that vertical movement of one armrest translates to synchronized, simultaneous vertical movement of the other armrest.
