Aqueous dispersions of vinyl polymers are disclosed. The polymers are copolymers of a vinyl halide, a vinyl ester, e.g., vinyl acetate, and a poly(alkylene glycol)-based macromonomer, e.g., poly(ethylene glycol)-maleic anhydride. Also disclosed are processes for the preparation of the aqueous dispersions which comprise forming the copolymer by solution polymerization, converting the dissolved polymer into an aqueous dispersion and removing the solvent from the aqueous dispersion.

Aoueous vinyl polymer dispersions

Novel unsaturated polylactone acrylates are produced by the reaction of an unsaturated polylactone, such as that produced in the reaction of a lactone with tetrahydrobenzyl alcohol, and a lower-alkyl acrylate under transesterification conditions. The unsaturated polylactone acrylate product may be subsequently epoxidized to form novel 3,4-epoxy polylactone acrylates.

Unsaturated polylactone acrylates and derivatives thereof

Cationic, anionic and amphoteric polymers suitable for the preparation of acid viscosifier compositions and the acid viscosified compositions are provided. The polymers are water soluble or water dispersible and are based on acrylyl monomers having the stated ionic charge. They are capable of viscosifying acid solutions that have important use in recovery of gas and oil from subterranean formations.

Acid viscosifier compositions

Gelable acid compositions containing novel crosslinkable copolymers and the novel copolymers. The copolymers contain an N-(alkoxymethylene)acrylyl moiety. In addition there are provided gelable acid compositions containing a group of polyfunctional reactants that contain a plurality of --CH.sub.2 OH and/or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH groups in the molecule.

Gelable acid viscosifiers

Water-soluble polysaccharides, including cellulose ethers, containing pendent vicinal dihydroxy structure capable of cis geometry, which upon crosslinking with a polyvalent metal, have shear-thermal stability characteristics of at least about 30 at 250.degree. F., are useful in oilfield applications.
