A pedestal which comprises a horizontal component and one or more vertical components which fit into open channels or fit over straight projections in the upper surface of the horizontal component. The pedestals are particularly useful in the catering and hospitality industry for supporting food and beverage containers, tableware, flower vases and sculptures.

Block pedestal having slidably supported horizontal members

A pedestal comprising (i) a pedestal base whose upper surface defines at least two pairs of open channels, (ii) horizontal lower support members placed in the channels, and (iii) at least one block component which is fitted slidably over one or more of the lower support members. Two or more block components can be used together, and upper support members can be placed in channels in the upper surfaces of the block components so that they are at right angles to the lower support members. The pedestals are particularly useful in the catering and hospitality industry for supporting food and beverage containers, tableware, flower vases and sculptures.

Pedestals

A pedestal base which is a hollow tube having a first periphery and a second periphery. At least one of the first and second peripheries includes at least two pairs of open channels. Each pair of open channels is sized and spaced around the periphery so that a support member of constant cross-section can be slidably fitted into the pair of channels. The pairs of channels are spaced around the periphery so that, when a straight support member is fitted into each pair of channels, all the support members are parallel to each other and form a platform for supporting objects. The pedestals are particularly useful in the catering industry for supporting food and beverage containers, tableware, flower vases and sculptures.

Detection of liquid leaks and other changes in variables is disclosed. The event causes two elongate conductors to become electrically connected at a location which is determined by the event, thus creating a system in which the connection point can be located by measuring the potential drop from one end of one of the conductors (called the locating member) to the connection point. The system comprises a balancing component so that its sensitivity is not dependent on the location of the event along an elongate path. A fixed current flows through the connection, so that the result is independent of the resistance of the connection. The locating member can be a continuous resistive wire, coated with a conductive polymer; such a locating member can form part of a sensor cable in which the elongate components of the circuit are in a wrapped configuration. Alternatively the locating member comprises a plurality of discrete resistors. The system is arranged so that only connections within a certain range of resistance will activate the system. The voltage drop is calculated by comparing it to the voltage drop over a resistor of known size. Particular event-sensitive connection means are employed for the detection of hydrocarbons.

Method for detecting and obtaining information about changes in variables

An elongate sensor for detecting and locating presence of a liquid, e.g. water or a hydrocarbon. The sensor includes first and second elongate members which are spaced apart from each other and each of which is a metal conductor covered by a conductive polymer; a third, insulated elongate conductor; and an elongate insulating core. At least one of the elongate members is helically wrapped around the core. Presence of the liquid at any point along the length of the sensor causes the first and second members to be electrically connected at that point, creating a system in which the potential drop down one of the members can be measured and the location of the connection determined.

Detection of events, e.g. liquid leaks and other changes in varibles. The voltage drop is preferably calculated by comparing it to the voltage drop over a resistor of known size. Particular event-sensitive connection means are preferably employed for the detection of hydrocarbons and for the detection of acids.

Corrosion protection systems which make use of a barrier which is placed between a corrodible substrate and a counter-electrode. The barrier can provide more uniform current distribution on the substrate, and/or enable the counter-electrode to be more easily maintained or replaced, and/or reduce the rate at which the current density on an elongate electrode changes with distance from the power source, and/or provide a controlled environment around the electrode to improve its efficiency.

Corrosion protection

A guiding catheter has incorporated toward its distal end, a flexible member capable of non-uniform elongation to cause the distal end portion to bend and straighten as desired so that it can be maneuvered through and accurately positioned in a tortuous, non-linear conduit containing branches, for example blood vessels. The flexible member comprises interconnected, and preferably braided, filaments with gaps between the filaments. The member has a first configuration that is axially lengthened and a second configuration that is axially shortened. Means are provided to move the member between its first and second configurations. Biasing means are provided to restrict axial lengthening along one side of the flexible member resulting in bending of the catheter tip.

Guiding catheter

This invention provides articles and methods for surface protection which comprises a layer of a gel material having a cone penetration of about 100 to about 350 (10.sup.-1 mm) and an ultimate elongation of at least 100% and a covering layer of a flexible material which is flexible when installed on the surface to be protected and is hardenable or curable so that after installation the covering layer hardens to hold the gel layer in position and protect the gel layer from mechanical and other environmental conditions. This invention is particularly suitable for providing surface protection for underwater structures by applying the gel layer to displace the water from the surface which is underwater and providing a water curable covering layer which, after being applied to the surface, cures underwater to provide the required mechanical protection for the gel layer.

Articles and methods for protecting substrates

An anode for the internal protection of hollow corrodible magnetically receptive metallic substrates is attached to a flexible permanent magnet along its length, thereby enabling it to hold to the substrate. This prevents abrasion and electrical short-circuiting of the anode when turbulent flow would cause an unattached anode to abrasively contact the substrate. A method of inserting the anode into a substrate, such as a pipe, is also described.
