An upper frequency-range circuit () includes a load element () exhibiting a capacitive load impedance. A first matching network () includes at least one nano-scale Litz wire () inductor. The first matching network () exhibits an inductive impedance that nominally matches the capacitive load impedance. An electrical conductor for providing connections for radio-frequency signals includes a plurality of nano-scale conductors () that are arranged in the form of a Litz wire (). In one method of making a Litz wire (), a plurality of carbon nanotubes () is placed on a substrate (). The carbon nanotubes () are woven according to a predefined scheme so as to form a Litz wire (). An inductor may be formed by manipulating the Litz wire () to form a coil ().

A circular polarized signal receiving antenna includes an active element having first and second ends separated by a gap. A dimension of the active element between the first and second ends thereof corresponds to approximately one wavelength of a resonant operating frequency of the antenna. A feed-point is coupled to the active element, wherein the feed-point is located approximately one-quarter of the wavelength from the first end of the active element and approximately three-quarters of the wavelength from the second end of the active element. In one embodiment, the feed-point is coupled to the active element.

An electronic device, like a mobile telephone, has a first section and a second section. The first section and second section are coupled together by a mechanical connection, for example a hinge, swivel or sliding connector. Electronic components in the first section are coupled to electronic components in the second section by conductors capable of transferring power between the first and second sections. A current detector is capable of detecting currents, like surface currents, while a controller is responsive to the current detector. A plurality of reactive elements, like capacitors for example, are coupled to a plurality of switches such that the controller may selectively couple any of the plurality of reactive elements to the conductors by actuating a corresponding switch. When the current detector detects a current in excess of a predetermined threshold, the controller alters the complex impedance between the first and second sections by actuating one or more of the switches, thereby coupling one or more of the reactive elements to the conductors.

An energy density diversity antenna (EDA) has a least a pair of antenna elements, whose feeding points are connected to outputs of a hybrid coupler configured such that a sum and a difference signal may exist at the feed points of the antenna elements. First reactive elements are respectively inserted in the antenna elements proximal the respective feed points. The antenna elements are joined at a point distal from the feed points by a second reactive element, and a third reactive element is coupled between feed lines coupled to the feed points at a location between the feed points and the outputs of the hybrid coupler.

The conductive sleeve () can have a variety of cross-sectional shapes. The dielectric spacer () can be formed in a variety of shapes from rigid or compressible dielectric materials. Likewise, the dielectric joint () can be formed in a variety of shapes from rigid or compressible dielectric materials. Using the dielectric joint () to link together multiple conductive sleeves () results in a flexible test cable () with electrical transparency at the frequency of interest.

A multi-band radio communication device with an antenna system that includes an antenna element and a parasitic element located in proximity to the antenna element. A tuning circuit is coupled to the parasitic element. The tuning circuit is variable to adjust the parasitic load on the antenna element to provide variable operating frequencies and bandwidths for the communication device.

An adaptive antenna system having a counterpoise conductor contained within a housing of a communication device and located distally from such surfaces of the housing that can be held by or placed in proximity to a user or external objects which detune the counterpoise. A tuning circuit is coupled between the counterpoise conductor and a ground. The tuning circuit is operable to adapt the resonant frequency of the counterpoise conductor to divert operational RF currents away from the ground located in proximity the user or external objects and onto the counterpoise conductor.

A balanced antenna system for a communication device includes a balanced transmission line electromagnetically coupled to a transceiver of the device. A symmetrical dipole antenna element is operable at a first frequency driven by the balanced transmission line. A symmetrical loop antenna shares portions of the dipole antenna element and is operable at a second frequency driven by the transmission line. Preferably, the antenna system is disposed within a flip portion of the device housing.

Balanced multi-band antenna system

An improved antenna system to channel counterpoise currents for an unbalanced antenna such as a helical monopole. A first conductor, or ground resonator, is coupled to a ground connection near the antenna and is located distally from a user to reduce electromagnetic exposure. The first conductor presents a low impedance path at an operating frequency of the antenna such that RF currents are attracted onto the first conductor. A second conductor, such as a printed circuit board or user interface circuitry, is also coupled to the ground connection of the first conductor. The second conductor presents a high impedance path at the operating frequency of the antenna such that RF currents are diverted away from the second conductor which is held closer to a user than the first conductor.

Also, antenna currents on the body of the communication device are minimized and the effects of a hand or body near the communication device are reduced.

An antenna arrangement (402) for a wireless communication device (400) comprises a first element (404) and a second element (406). The first element (404) is coupled to circuitry (408) of the wireless communication device (400). The second element (406) is movable between a first and a second position relative to the first element (404). The performance of the antenna arrangement (402) is substantially less desirable when the second element (406) is between the first and the second position than the performance of the antenna arrangement (402) when the second element (406) is at either the first or the second position. The second element (406) is mechanically spaced apart from and substantially electrically coupled to the first element (404) in both the first and the second position. The antenna arrangement (402) advantageously provides for reduced dimensions while achieving desirable performance.
