A coating composition is provided which is suitable for the protection of corrodible metallic surfaces. The coating composition includes a binder and a filler, with the filler present in an amount sufficient to impart corrosion-resistant characteristics to the coating composition. The filler comprises conductive metal particles and particles of a metal composition which comprises silicon and at least one active metal. The metal composition can be an alloy of silicon with an active metal which is unstable when introduced alone into water or a silicide of an active metal which is unstable when introduced alone into water.

Electrically conductive articles which comprise a non-conductive substrate having thereon a substantially uniform, electrically conductive dispersion of finely divided particles of ferroalloys, silicon alloys, or mixtures thereof, are described. The articles are useful as components of electrical switches, contacts, connectors, circuit boards or electromagnetic interference shields. The conductive portion of the article may be subsequently electroplated or electrostatically painted.

Anodes for current generating cells having good corrosion resistance, voltage stability and long life, especially in primary current generating cells, are described. The anodes comprise an anode composition having from about 20 to about 90 weight percent of the first constituent selected from the group consisting of iron and silicon and at least about 10 weight percent of a second constituent different from the first constituent and selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, niobium, titanium, phosphorus, and silicon. Anode compositions containing iron and a second constituent other than silicon may also contain up to about 10 weight percent silicon.

Anodes which exhibit electrochemical potentials comparable to zinc are prepared from alloys formed from silicon together with one or more highly reactive elements which are unstable when introduced alone into water. The highly active element component of the alloy is preferably selected from the group consisting of calcium, barium, magnesium, cerium and strontium. Preferably, the active element or elements comprise from about 5 to about 65 percent of the alloy.

A cathodic bed of essentially inert, low cost silicon metal alloys in particulate form is used for the removal of ionic impurities from aqueous solutions by electrolytic deposition. The alloys used are substantially inert to the strong acid used to regenerate the alloy surface and remove the deposited metals.
