A liquid crystal display (LCD) panel has a variable white balance. The LCD panel includes an LCD screen, a first light source, a second light source and a light path directing the first and second light sources onto the LCD screen and a control circuit used to adjust the relative intensities of the first and second light sources. The first light source has a first color spectrum and the second light source a second color spectrum. The color spectrums of the first and second light sources are mixed in the light path to create a balanced white spectrum.

A display device has a screen, a housing, a mirror, and a projector. The housing extending away from one side of the screen and has an opening. The mirror is disposed within the housing. The projector is moveable relative to the housing to selectively engage the opening for projection at the mirror and to extend away from a second side of the screen for projection onto a surface.

Upon activation of a portable computer, a check is made to see if a user has indicated a reduced operating system is to be used. If the user has indicated the reduced operating system is to be used, the reduced operating system is activated. The reduced operating system is stored within a special memory area within the portable computer. The reduced operating system uses less system resources than a full function operating system for the portable computer. If the computer is activated and the user has not indicated the reduced operating system is to be used, the full function operating system of the portable computer is activated.

The at least two light sources are activated independently of each other to selectively increase or decrease the illumination of the display panel. A circuit is coupled to the at least two light sources. The circuit determines which of the at least two light sources is chosen such that the combined life of the at least two light sources is increased.

A computing system is presented which has a central processing unit (CPU) and peripheral devices. Identification registers associated with each peripheral device may be accessed by the CPU to identify characteristics of individual peripheral devices. Additionally, configuration registers within each peripheral device allow a particular peripheral device to determine whether instructions from the CPU are addressing that particular peripheral device.
