A railroad searchlight signal for producing light signals of selected colors. The searchlight uses a reflector that has an inner surface of reflective material and a focal point. One or more light emitting diodes are provided at the reflector focal point. When a current is supplied to the light emitting diode from a variable current power source, a light having a color that varies dependent upon the current is produced. The colored light produced at the light emitting diode is then directed outward of the reflector as a beam. At least one color filter that allows light of a respective color to pass therethrough is preferably provided proximate the reflector. Light that passes through the color filter is detected by a light detector such as a photovoltaic cell, a phototransistor or a photodiode.

A railway signal having a housing, in which the housing has an annular ledge thereon. The annular ledge has first and second opposed surfaces. One or more portions of the second ledge surface, preferably cast raised bosses, are machined so as to have a selected height. A reflector is mounted upon the first ledge surface. Also attached to the signal housing is a lamp receptacle bracket. The lamp receptacle bracket has a first end that is mounted upon the one or more machined portions of the second ledge surface. The lamp receptacle bracket also has a second end that has a lamp receptacle attached thereto. An insulating plate is disposed between the lamp receptacle flat portion and the lamp receptacle bracket flat surface.

An apparatus for providing a light signal to a signal unit at an overhead location along a railway signal structure, particularly a cantilever signal structure having a vertical mast and an arm assembly extending therefrom. Signal units may be located along the mast and/or the arm assembly. A light source is provided at or near ground level so as to be readily accessible by a maintainer and is connected by fiber optic cable to the signal units. Thus, light produced by the light source travels through the optical fiber to the signal units.

A railway switch circuit controller having a housing with a bottom surface and opposed side surfaces. The bottom surface has a raised planar boss provided thereon, in which the raised boss is cast upon the bottom surface and is then machined so as to have a flat surface and a selected height. The side surfaces have respective openings provided therethrough for receiving a shaft. The shaft is rotatably disposed through the side surface openings and has one or more cam segments disposed thereupon. Each cam is engageable with a follower in which the follower is biased to a first position but rotation of the shaft causes the cam to move the follower to a second position. The follower is connected to a movable contact of a contact spring assembly. The contact spring assembly also has one or more sets of first and second generally nonmovable contacts in which the movable contact is disposed between the two nonmovable contacts. The contact spring assembly is secured to a terminal board. The terminal board has a planar portion that is matable and is secured to the raised boss of the controller housing bottom surface.

A system is disclosed to selectively initiate braking at a rear section of a railway train upon initiation of a selected front braking condition at the front section of the railway vehicle. The system utilizes an air sensor preferably constructed in the form of an insect excluder device to detect release of brake pipe air from an exhaust port upon initiation of braking at the front section of the vehicle. An appropriate signal is produced by the air sensor, thus permitting detector circuitry to detect that front braking has been initiated. A transmitter, typically located in the cab of the locomotive, is electrically connected to the detector circuitry. When the detector circuitry indicates that the selected front braking condition has been initiated, the transmitter transmits a brake initiation signal to a receiver located at the rear of the vehicle. The receiver then actuates pneumatic braking equipment at the rear to initiate rear braking. The air sensor may include a generally rigid insect shield connected to actuate the armature of an electrical switch upon passage of air. Such an air sensor may also be constructed utilizing a deformable insect shield configured to operate as a variable capacitor when air passes through the exhaust port. If connected in a resonant circuit, this variable capacitor may provide a detectable voltage variation which can be used to indicate initiation of front braking.

The present invention provides a generally contactless method and apparatus for producing a speed reference for a rail vehicle which amenable to retrofit applications. The invention utilizes a laser source to direct a laser beam on a portion of the wheel and axle assembly of the rail vehicle. In presently preferred embodiments, the laser beam is directed on a tread or flange section of the vehicle wheel. The laser beam is believed to excite the molecules on the surface of the wheel in such a way that magnetic susceptibility is significantly increased. The increased magnetic susceptibility facilitates encoding of a magnetic signal by a magnetic encoding head. This magnetic signal may then be received after further rotation of the wheel by an angularly displaced magnetic receiving head. Processing circuitry is electrically connected to the magnetic encoding head and the magnetic receiving head to derive the speed reference based on the angular velocity and dimensions of the wheel. An erasing head may also be provided to remove the magnetic signal after detection by the receiving head.

Method and apparatus for determining the operating speed of a rail

A sensing device mounted on a railway locomotive vehicle axle assembly to sense signalling currents conducted through the axle. The device also serves to protect the critical traction motor support bearing from contamination by foreign substances. The sensing device includes a core member mounted in material at least partially covering the bearing and maintaining the core member in position encircling the axle. The core member conducts magnetic flux caused by the flow of current through the axle. An electrical conductor wound about the core member and/or a hall effect sensor embedded within the core member detect the presence of the flux. Clamping bands maintain the mounting material in position about the axle.

A railroad track mounting arrangement for mounting a detecting device in proximate relation to a rail head portion of a section of rail includes first and second V-shaped rail clamp member which exhibit inner contours substantially equivalent to the outer contour of the rail base such that a tight fit is achieved therebetween. A side mounting portion extends from the rail clamp members at a point where, upon installation of the rail clamps, the side mounting portions are in close proximity to the rail base. A mounting bracket secures to the side mounting portion and has a base portion for holding in a secure manner the detecting device. A nut and bolt arrangement secures the rail clamps together and, in the event of overtightening, fractures, thereby insuring positive detection of a faulty installation.
