Various systems, methods, and processes for optimizing the performance of a consolidated full backup of a restored virtual machine are disclosed. Changed data and metadata associated with the changed data is received from a hypervisor at a backup module. The hypervisor supports a virtual machine, and the virtual machine employs virtual disks. A confirmation is sent to the hypervisor from the backup module indicating that a full backup of the virtual disks has been created.

A method for providing resource throttling management. The method includes accessing a distributed computer system having a plurality of nodes, initiating a new object policy object backup protection for a new object, and implementing a discovery process to determine computer environment components subject to stress. The method further includes generating a physical resource throttling protocol in accordance with the components subject to stress, and processing the new object in accordance with the object management policy and in accordance with the throttling protocol.

Resource throttling and automated policy management in a virtual machine environment

Techniques for managing virtual machine backups are disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method for managing virtual machine backups comprising opening a file containing a virtual disk of a virtual machine, parsing the file to identify one or more partitions of the virtual disk, determining file system type for each of one or more partitions, identifying a boot partition in the file, parsing, using at least one computer processor, file system information of the boot partition to identify volume information; and generating volume composition information using the identified volume information.

A method for providing object policy management. The method includes accessing a distributed computer system having a plurality of nodes, and initiating a new object policy object backup protection for a new object. The method further includes processing a list of object attributes available for the new object policy, and processing the list to generate an object management policy. The new object is then processed in accordance with the object management policy.

Automated policy management in a virtual machine environment

A computer-implemented method for restoring distributed applications within virtual data centers may include (1) receiving a request to restore a distributed application that includes at least one virtual machine to a virtual data center, (2) identifying a backup of the virtual machine stored within backup storage, (3) exposing the backup of the virtual machine stored within the backup storage to a hypervisor, (4) regenerating the virtual machine by accessing the backup of the virtual machine at the backup storage, (5) adding the virtual machine to the distributed application, and (6) restoring, before completely recovering the virtual machine from the backup storage to the datastore of the virtual data center, the distributed application by starting the virtual machine as part of the distributed application. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for restoring distributed applications within virtual data centers

A system and method for backing up a virtual machine executing on a virtualization server computer are described. A snapshot of a virtual disk image file of the virtual machine may be created on a network-attached storage (NAS) device coupled to the virtualization server computer. The snapshot may be used to backup the virtual disk image file from the NAS device to a backup storage device without transferring the virtual disk image file through the virtualization server computer. Mapping information useable to access the plurality of files stored in the virtual disk image file on an individual basis may be created and stored together with the backup copy of the virtual disk image file on the backup storage device.
