The present disclosure relates to a system that includes a support member and a sign supported by the support member. The sign may have a generally planar shape and may extend in a plane. The system also includes a repositioning mechanism coupled to the sign and the support member. The repositioning mechanism rotates the sign substantially in-plane. The system may further include a controller for controlling rotation of the sign. In one implementation, the repositioning mechanism is retrofitted on an existing sign and an existing support member. The repositioning mechanism may include a power source attached to the support member that provides power to the repositioning mechanism. The repositioning mechanism may further include a linkage attached to the sign and a transmission for transferring rotational power to the sign, wherein the transmission is interconnected between the power source and the linkage.

Improved fiber reinforced composites having near zero coefficients of thermal expansion are described. The improved composites include reinforcing fibers and matrix material in which gap structures which exist within the composite are filled with a bonding agent. The reinforcing fibers can be unidirectionally, bidirectionally or multidirectionally oriented within the matrix material and articles fabricated from the improved composite have reduced coefficients of thermal expansion in directions transverse to the orientations of the fibers. This improvement makes these improved composites useful for fabricating high energy laser mirror substrates.

A ceramic pump cavity structure for use in solid state lasers wherein the pump cavity comprises sintered alumina having grain sizes of between about 0.3 to 0.5 microns. Sintered alumina pump cavities having grain sizes within this range provide desirable diffuse reflectivity comparable to barium sulfate while at the same time providing a structurally strong cavity which is resistant to cracking and breakage. Combinations of the alumina oxide pump cavity with parasitic light absorbers such as samarium oxide are also disclosed.

Compositions of matter and method of use of compositions consisting essentially of a mixture, in effective amounts, of (a) a terpene or mixtures thereof, and (b) vitamin E. An apparatus and process are disclosed for utilizing solar radiation and the energy contained therein for the carbothermic reduction of a metal oxide to a metal carbide. The apparatus comprises a reflective surface which collects and focuses solar radiation onto a focal mirror which consequentially reflects and focuses the solar light rays into a reaction chamber through a Fresnel lens and a transparent window provided on the chamber. The solar light rays are focused by the reflective surface focal mirror and Fresnel lens such that the energy absorbed by reactants in the reaction chamber is sufficient for the carbothermic reduction of the metal oxide.

A non-powered portable dishwasher, especially suited for insertion within a sink, has an enclosed dish-holding container with a rack for separating dirty dishes and a sealable top member for creating an enclosed washing chamber. Suspended from the top member, vertically descending, intermediate the various dirty dishes to be washed are a plurality of flexible washing bladders. Each of these washing bladders in turn has a series of washing apertures permitting the spray of water. Each of the washing bladders is manifolded to a wash-water manifold, which provides for connecting a continuous flow of hot water to the dishwasher, as well as providing for the addition of soap or detergent. When the dishwasher is assembled, filled with dirty dishes, and a source of hot water is supplied, the individual washing bladders will fill with the supplied water and detergent swelling to a larger size contacting the dishes. As a part of the swelling, the individual spray apertures will open emitting a greater volume of wash-water which in turn causes the bladder to collapse. A combination of the surging of the bladders and the substantially horizontal spray direction of the wash water upon the dirty dishes provides an effective cleaning capability and a mild scrubbing action. The necessity for granulated or abrasive detergents, as found in typical spray dishwashers, is eliminated. The dishwasher is particularly advantageous as a portable dishwasher not requiring electrical power for use in campers, mobile homes, campsites and the like.

Method for the carbothermic reduction of metal oxides using solar energy

Carbon fiber reinforced tantalum carbide composites are produced by vacuum infiltration of omni-weave carbon, e.g. three dimensional graphite, yarn preforms with an aqueous saturated solution containing tantalum fluoride and sucrose. Anhydrous ammonia is added under pressure, forming ammonium fluoride, which is removed by vacuum sublimation by application of heat. The resulting preform containing tantalum pentoxide and partially pyrolyzed sucrose is heated at high temperature and reduced pressure to decompose the sucrose to yield active carbon which reacts with the tantalum pentoxide to yield tantalum carbide and carbon monoxide. After repeated multiple infiltrations and processing, a composite is produced having a matrix of tantalum carbide or tantalum carbide and carbon, which is reinforced in three or more directions with high strength-high modulus carbon or graphite yarn, the amount of carbon in the matrix phase being a function of the amount of sucrose present in the aqueous solution of tantalum fluoride.
