A method of aligning optical signals in a fiber optic switching device with one or two phase light modulators (PLMs) includes configuring the phase elements of the PLMs with first initial settings, to direct an optical signal from an input fiber to an output fiber. An initial position displacement of a center of the signal image from a center of the output fiber is estimated. Corrected settings for the phase elements are calculated so that when the corrected settings are applied to the phase elements, a corrected signal image of the optical signal has a corrected position displacement from the center of the output fiber that is less than the initial position displacement. A fiber optic switching device has processing circuitry and a memory component configured to execute steps of the method of aligning the optical signals.

Rapid fiber optic alignment techniques for optical switching

An integrated circuit includes an electrode voltage controller, a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) structure, and a bias voltage generator. The MEMS structure has a first electrode, a conductive plate, and a reflective layer on the conductive plate. The first electrode is coupled to the electrode voltage controller, and the conductive plate is configured to move vertically with respect to the first electrode responsive to a voltage generated by the electrode voltage controller and applied to the first electrode. The bias voltage generator is coupled to the conductive plate. The bias voltage generator has an input configured to receive a bias control signal. The bias voltage generator is configured to apply a non-zero bias voltage to the conductive plate responsive to the bias control signal.

Bias voltage adjustment for a phase light modulator

A calibration circuit providing a programmable voltage generator that is selectively connectable to a first capacitor plate of a capacitive structure to supply a voltage thereto. A reference voltage generator is coupled to the output of the programmable voltage generator and generates a reference voltage. A comparator receives the reference voltage and a discharging voltage from the capacitive structure during a discharge period and, based on those inputs, generates a signal that is output to a digital controller. A constant current source is selectively connectable to the capacitive structure to generate a constant current. Based on the output of the comparator, the constant current, and a count representing a time during which the discharging voltage decreases, the digital controller measures capacitance to calibrate a movable mirror of the capacitive structure. During calibration, the digital controller controls the programmable voltage generator and a second capacitor plate of the capacitive structure.

Circuits and methods to calibrate mirror displacement

Described examples include apparatus having a driving electrode on a substrate. The apparatus has a platform suspended above the driving electrode and conductively coupled to a platform electrode, where the platform is configured to move in a direction perpendicular to a surface of the substrate in response to a voltage difference applied between the driving electrode and the platform electrode. The apparatus also has a mirror post on the platform. The apparatus has a mirror coupled to the platform by the mirror post, where the mirror is rectangular.

MEMS-based phase spatial light modulating architecture

In an example, a system includes a digital micromirror device (DMD). The DMD includes a hinge and one or more spring tips coupled to the hinge, where the hinge is configured to tilt toward a raised address electrode. The DMD includes a micromirror including a recessed mirror shelf and a reflective surface, where the recessed mirror shelf is coupled to the hinge, and where the recessed mirror shelf is configured to contact at least one of the one or more spring tips responsive to the hinge tilting toward the raised address electrode.

A phase light modulator includes a base plate, a mirror, a perforated hinge plate, and first second support posts. The perforated hinge plate supports the mirror. The perforated hinge plate has first and second flexural arms. The perforated hinge plate is configured to move toward or away from the base plate based on application of a potential difference between the base plate and the perforated hinge plate. The first flexural arm is connected to the first support posts, and the second flexural arm is connected to the second support post.

A system includes a hinge structure. The hinge structure includes four support posts and four hinges, each hinge coupled to an edge of a support post and to a plate of the hinge structure, where each hinge includes two 90° turns. A digital micromirror device comprises an array of micromirror pixels, the array comprising a first micromirror pixel and a second micromirror pixel. The first micromirror pixel comprises a hinge, where the hinge is configured to tilt toward a first raised address electrode and toward a second raised address electrode. The first micromirror pixel also comprises a first micromirror coupled to the hinge, where the first micromirror has a sculpted edge. The second micromirror pixel comprises a second micromirror, where a first gap between a first point on the sculpted edge and a nearest point to the first point on the second micromirror is larger than a second gap between a second point on the sculpted edge and a nearest point to the second point on the second micromirror.

In one example, a method comprises forming a first layer on a substrate surface, forming an opening in the first layer, forming a second layer on the first layer and in the opening, and forming a photoresist layer on the second layer, in which the photoresist layer has a first curved surface over a first part of the first layer and over the opening. The method further comprises etching the photoresist layer and a second part of the second layer over the first part of the first layer to form a second curved surface on the second part of the second layer, and forming a mirror element and a support structure in the second layer, including by etching a third part of the second layer and removing the first layer.

Described examples include an apparatus having a substrate with a substrate surface. The apparatus also includes an element with a planar surface facing the substrate surface and with a nonplanar surface opposite the planar surface facing away from the substrate surface.

A microelectromechanical actuator for a light beam steering device is provided that includes memory cells coupled to at least one electronic circuitry component and electrode segments coupled to a respective one of the memory cells via the at least one electronic circuitry component. A flexible metal layer having support pillars is on the electrode segments. Flexible beams are attached to the support pillars and a movable electrode attaches to the flexible beams. A mirror is attached to the movable electrode. When one or more of the electrode segments is activated, the mirror is displaced a distance to steer a light beam output from a light source in a direction.

MEMS electrostatic actuator with linearized displacements

In methods and apparatus for increasing efficiency and optical bandwidth of a microelectromechanical system piston-mode spatial light modulator, an example apparatus includes: an electrode with spring legs; a base electrode; a mirror displacement determiner to determine a periodic signal corresponding to a displacement distance of the electrode beyond an instability point of the electrode; and a voltage source to output a periodic voltage to the base electrode in response to the periodic signal. The periodic voltage causes the spring legs to vary displacement of the electrode with respect to the base electrode according to the periodic voltage. The displacement includes distances beyond the instability point.

Methods and apparatus for increasing efficiency and optical bandwidth of a microelectromechanical system piston-mode spatial light modulator

One or more apparatus providing over-travel protection for actuators are disclosed. An example apparatus includes a mirror; a first plate coupled to the mirror; and a support post coupled the first plate, the support post structured to prevent the mirror from moving within a threshold distance to a second plate.

In described examples, a DMD includes an array of micromirror pixels. Each pixel includes a right electrode on a first side of the pixel, a left electrode on a second side of the pixel adjacent the first side, and a cantilevered beam supporting a mirror. The cantilever beam tilts on two axes of translation: pitch and roll. The mirror has: a first landed position (on a first and second spring tip) over the right electrode; and a second landed position (on the first and a third spring tip) over the left electrode, such that the first landed position and the second landed positions are 90&#xb0; apart. In transitioning from the first landed position to the second landed position, the mirror maintains contact with the first spring tip while rolling from the second spring tip to the third spring tip.

Micromirror apparatus and methods

A piezoelectric energy harvester device has a cantilevered structure with a rectangular proof mass portion defined by holes through a substrate along three sides of a proof mass portion and supported by a thinned hinge portion for free pivotal movement relative to an anchor portion. Elongated strips of piezoelectric energy harvesting units are formed in side-by-side spaced positions on the hinge portion and aligned parallel or perpendicular to a stress direction. Multiplexing electronics coupled to contact pads on the anchor portion selectively connects different strip combinations to power management circuitry, responsive to variations in vibration magnitude or modes.
