A capacitor may be configured with a dielectric laminate disposed on ordered or non-ordered structures. Materials for the dielectric laminate have high dielectric constant and reduce leakage current to increase breakdown voltage of the device. These materials may include titanium dioxide (TiO) and silicon dioxide (SiO). In one implementation, the capacitor may reside on a substrate. The capacitor may have structure (e.g., nano-tubes, nano-holes, etc) disposed on the substrate having a surface area greater than the surface area of the substrate and a laminate conformally coating the structure, the laminate comprising a first layer and a second layer with materials that configure the capacitor with an energy density of at least 60 Wh/Kg.

Performance of capacitors

A system and method for imaging gamma- and x-ray, and charged particles sources employing a three dimensional array of scintillation elements arranged surrounding an emission source. According to a preferred embodiment, each element of the array comprises a scintillator element, a solid-state photon detector, and processing electronics to output an electronic signal. The elements may be efficiently packed in both the X-Y plane and stacked in the Z-axis, to provide depth of interaction information. The elements of the array are preferably hierarchically arranged with control electronics provided together for subarray modules (e.g., an n&#xd7;m&#xd7;1 module), and synchronization electronics provided at a larger scale. The modules preferably communicate with a control system through a shared addressable packet switched digital communication network with a control and imaging system, and receive control information from that system through the network.

Autonomous gamma, X-ray, and particle detector

A sensor system utilizing flexible electronics for on-line real-time high-sensitivity sampling, monitoring, and analysis of a parameter or analyte of interest in a fluid or in or on a solid is provided. The flexible substrate sensor system comprises a plurality of sensors, a flexible substrate, a network, and a connection between the sensors and the network, wherein the network reads out or collects information from the sensors. The network can be onboard, connected by via a physical connection to the sensors and the flexible substrate, or external to the sensors and flexible substrate, connected via a telemetric or wireless connection to the sensors. The flexible substrate sensor system can be deployed in systems that conduct or distribute fluids or solids, such as distribution systems (municipal water systems, oil or gas pipeline systems), industrial systems (production facilities, piping, and storage systems), and large structures (dams, bridges, walkways, buildings).

Flexible substrate sensor system for environmental and infrastructure monitoring

A method for rapid, fully automatic, two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) tracing of line-structure images, such as images of neurons produced by fluorescence confocal microscopy. A method of recursively following the line-structure topology, guided by the correlation response of a set of 4&#xd7;Ndirectional kernels in the 3-D case, and a set of 2&#xd7;N directional kernels in the 2-D case, is presented. These kernels are derived based on a generalized cylinder model of the line-structures. The automatic tracing method includes a protocol for determining the ends of line-structures.

Method and apparatus for automatically tracing line-structure images

This invention provides a standard specimen useful for the quantitative evaluation of performance of stains, staining solutions and staining processes used on biological specimens, and also for the evaluation of dyestuffs. The standard specimens are comprised of extracts of biological materials containing protein and/or nucleic acid which are incorporated into a reproducible plastic matrix of controlled thickness. The standard specimen so produced is useful in the quantitative performance evaluation of a dyeing or staining process, thereby providing information for process control and quantitative analysis and comparisons. The invention also provides for the method of preparing the standard specimen of the invention, as well as for the method of using the standard specimen.
