A cover fabric for power transmission belts, hoses and the like, having improved durability in service, appearance, and handling characteristics. The cover fabric includes a strip of Jersey knit fabric having a plurality of stitch loops forming interconnected loop chains. The interconnected loop chains form wales and courses. The strip is bias cut such that each of the wales are disposed at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the knit fabric strip. The knit fabric cover may include a coating of elastomer, such as polychloroprene, thereon. Preferably, the wales are disposed at an angle of from about 40.degree. to about 70.degree. with respect to the longitudinal axis, and, more preferably, at an angle of about 55.degree.. Preferably, the wales of the knit fabric cover are disposed at an angle of greater than 90.degree. with respect to the courses, and, more preferably, at an angle of from about 100.degree. to about 110.degree..

A reinforced V-belt and method relating to same in which the V-belt comprises bottom, middle and top portions, the bottom portion consisting of a layer of bias cushion fabric and one or more layers of a seamless 'fiber-loaded' non-woven fabric which has been impregnated with first and second solvent solutions and a plurality of chopped or staple length fibers generally oriented in the cross-machine direction relative to the longitudinal axis of the non-woven fabric; the middle portion consists of rubberized cord and a layer of non-woven fabric disposed on top of the rubberized cord; the top portion consists of bias cushion fabric.

Method for producing reinforced V-belt containing fiber-loaded non-woven

Elastomer-coated fabric products having predetermined potential extension in the fabric's machine direction and processes for producing the same. The fabric product of the invention preferably includes an elastomer-coated warp-knit, weft-insert fabric whereby the warp knit yarns provide a first potential elongation (as by selection of the type and/or denier of yarns employed). The fabric is compressed in the machine direction (as by overfeeding the fabric to a tenter frame during production) so as to provide a second potential elongation, and is maintained in its compressed state by virtue of the elastomer coating thereon. The first and second elongation potentials thus collectively establish the total potential elongation for the fabric in the machine direction. The cross-machine yarns, however, are chosen for their inextensible properties so that the fabric product of this invention will provide lateral support to end use products employing the same as a reinforcing medium, such as tires, power transmission belts, conveyor belts, and the like.

A seamless non-woven fabric containing chopped fibers for reinforcing and stabilizing V-belts is produced by impregnating the fabric with first and second solvent solutions and expanding the width of the non-woven fabric to reorient the chopped fibers during their solvated state such that a high percentage remain perpendicular to the length of the fabric.

A cover fabric for a V belt having increased flex and wear-life, and a method of making the cover fabric. A fabric is bias cut into a continuous strip of fabric. The individual fibers in the continuous strip are impregnated with an elastomeric polymeric material effective to increase the flex and wear-life of the fabric when used as a cover fabric for V belts. This impregnation is accomplished by immersing the strip in a fluid mix having a viscosity of about 2000 cps or less, the mix including a fluid carrier, an elastomeric polymer (e.g. a polychloroprene compound) and a dark pigment. A coating of an elastomeric polymer (e.g. another polychloroprene compound) is applied to the strip, the strip is stretched in its width direction to increase the angular relation of the threads of the fabric relative to its longitudinal axis, and the thus coated strip is dried. The continuous strip is ultimately slit longitudinally of itself into a plurality of tapes, and the tapes are used to cover a V belt.
