Color mixing using the reflective properties of an OLED is provided. At least one OLED is used to reflect light from at least one other light source such that light from the OLED and the additional light source are combined. Light from the additional light source is reflected from a surface in the OLED provided by e.g., the cathode of the OLED. By carefully selecting the individual light colors of the OLED and the additional light source, their combined light can provide a light color different from either the OLED or the additional light source alone.

A large area, flexible, OLED assembly has improved thermal management by providing a metal cathode of increased thickness of at least 500 nm. A thermal heat sink trace may be used as alternative or in conjunction with the increased thickness cathode where the trace leads from a central region of the OLED toward a perimeter region, or by other backsheet thermal management designs. External heat sinking, for example to a plate, fixture, etc. may be additionally used or in conjunction with the increased thickness cathode and/or backsheet design to provide further thermal management.

Thermal management in large area flexible OLED assembly

A light panel includes a light source having a generally planar, light emitting surface and a perimeter edge. A backsheet is disposed in substantially parallel relation with the light emitting surface, and an electrical feed-through region extends through the backsheet at a location spaced inwardly from the perimeter. A generally planar, flexible connector cable extends over the backsheet from the perimeter to the electrical feed-through region for establishing electrical connection with the light source. Openings in conductive pads provided in the flexible cable permit a conductive material to be inserted there through and mechanically and electrically interconnect the cable and the light panel.

Organic light emitting device connection methods

Disclosed herein is a light emitting electrical package having a first electrode layer comprising a substantially transparent nonmetallic conductive material, and a plurality of light emitting elements disposed on said first electrode layer. The first electrode layer comprises a peripheral region, and an elongated bus is disposed on at least a portion of the peripheral region and adjacent the first electrode layer. The elongated bus is configured to spread current across a length dimension of said first electrode layer. Also disclosed are elongated bus structure designed intended to reduce the resistive losses along a transparent nonmetallic conductive contact at its edge or periphery. One design for an elongated bus comprises: (1) a conductive adhesive/metal foil/conductive adhesive sandwich structure; (2) another design comprises a vapor deposited bus of one or more materials; and a further design employs (1) and (2) in tandem.

Large area light emitting electrical package with current spreading bus

A light emitting assembly includes a backplane having a first surface area and an impermeable layer. At least first and second light emitting devices are received on the first surface of the backplane, each light emitting device having a surface area less than the first surface area and electrically connected to an associated external driver. The first and second light emitting devices are positioned on the backplane in contiguous relation without a hermetic edge seal therebetween to maximize the filling factor, and an encapsulating material is received over and seals the first and second light emitting devices.

Large-area flexible OLED light source

A fluorescent lamp having a protective polymeric sleeve to provide impact resistance and contain fragments if the lamp shatters. The sleeve comprises an inner layer of a UV-blocking polymeric material and an adjacent layer of a polymeric material, preferably polycarbonate. The inner layer is preferably a co-polymer comprised of a polycarbonate block and a block comprised of isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, and resorcinol. The inner layer helps protect the rest of the sleeve from UV degradation.

A light source assembly and associated method of forming same includes a generally planar light emitting device having parallel first and second generally planar surfaces that are interconnected along a perimeter. A seal extends over at least a portion of the light emitting device. Further, a sidewall portion encloses the perimeter of a light emitting device, and a cover portion may extend over at least a portion of the light emitting device. The method includes folding perimeter edges of an enlarged backsheet, or providing a frame seal that is dimensioned so that perimeter edges may be folded over the light emitting device.

The present invention relates to an electro-optical device, wherein the device is a light source, for example an OLED. The OLED includes at least a substrate, a cathode, an anode, one or more organic light-emissive materials disposed between the cathode and anode, and a gradient refractive index film disposed on an external, light emitting surface of the device, for example on the substrate layer. Alternatively, the device may be constructed with the gradient refractive index film as the substrate, and/or the gradient refractive index film may be applied to more than one light-emitting surface of a device.

An organic light emitting device includes a cathode and an optional substrate external to the device. The device further includes at least one film layer disposed on at least one of the cathode or the substrate. The at least one film layer includes at least one of a magnetic, a mixed magnetic material, and combinations thereof. The device further includes an anode and at least one organic layer intermediate the cathode and anode.

Organic light emitting diode with magnetic structure for improved current adaptability

A generally planar, flexible light source assembly or OLED device includes a generally planar, flexible light emitting member having opposite first and second surfaces. An impermeable backsheet is disposed along the first surface of the light emitting surface and includes a conductive portion and an opening through the backsheet. A conductive tab or cover is received over the opening, and an insulator is disposed between the tab cover and the opening to mitigate the risk of electrical contact between the components. The insulator can be precut washer-like members or an applied insulating material situated between the conductive components of the light source assembly that pose a potential for shorting. Using tabs with burr-free edges also mitigates against the risk of electrical shorting.

Mitigating shorting risks in encapsulated organic light emitting devices (OLEDs)

A fluorescent lamp having a protective polymeric sleeve to provide impact resistance and contain fragments if the lamp shatters. A UV-blocking layer is coated on the outside of the glass envelope of the lamp or on the inside of the sleeve to help protect the polymeric sleeve from UV degradation. The UV-blocking layer includes a UV-blocking component of AlOor ZnO or SiOor TiOor mixtures thereof.
