Various embodiments include apparatuses and systems for controlling rotational imbalance of a rotary element. In one embodiment, a rotational imbalance reduction apparatus includes at least one heating element for heating a location on a rotary element, a pulsing element configured to pulse actuate the heating element in synchronization with a multiple, fraction, or mixed fraction of the frequency of rotation of the rotary element, and a control system coupled with the pulsing element and the heating element, the control system actuating the heating element and the pulsing element to apply heat to the location of the rotary element in pulses synchronized with the multiple, fraction, or mixed fraction of the frequency of rotation of the rotary element.

Rotational imbalance reduction

A system includes an electrodynamically suspended seal. The electrodynamically suspended seal includes a first element that includes an electrically conducting material and a second element that includes a magnetic material. At least one of the first and second elements is configured to rotate about an axial axis. The first and second elements are disposed adjacent one another. The rotational movement of at least one of the first and second elements creates a levitation force such that the first and second elements are repelled away from one another. The electrodynamically suspended seal also includes a third element configured to create a counteracting force.

Seal system and method for rotary machine

An approach for converting a synchronous generator to a synchronous condenser is disclosed. In one aspect, a variable frequency driver is used to provide a starting power source to accelerate a synchronous generator decoupled from a turbine to an operational speed to act as a synchronous condenser. In another aspect, the synchronous condenser can be recoupled back to the turbine to form the synchronous generator.

A stator for an electrical machine includes teeth assembled from a plurality of stacked laminations mounted on a cylindrical protective surface thereby forming a plurality of slots. The stator also includes an armature winding assembled within the teeth by inserting components of the armature winding into the plurality of stator slots from positions external to the teeth in a manner that facilitates mitigating potential for coil distortion. The armature winding includes a plurality of coils that each include an end winding. The stator further includes a segmented yoke inserted around the armature winding in a manner that facilitates mitigating a potential for disturbing the end winding of the coils. Independently assembling the stator components in this manner facilitates varying a thickness and/or the number of heat conducting laminations between the yoke and teeth that subsequently facilitates heat transfer from the armature winding to an outer pressure casing of the machine.

Apparatus for using an electrical machine to transport fluids through a pipeline

A portable power system has a turbine engine generating mechanical energy. A homopolar electrical machine receives this energy. The homopolar electrical machine has a single stationary superconducting field coil configured to create a magnetic field. A homopolar rotor is configured to rotate within the magnetic field such that a rotating magnetic field is created in a stationary winding by interaction of the rotating permeance wave produced by the homopolar rotor and the magnetic field produced by the single stationary field coil. The homopolar electrical machine is configured as a generator and produces electrical power for the portable power system.

The electrical machine includes a rotor assembly that further includes an array of magnets configured to generate a distributed magnetic field. Methods and apparatus for using an electrical machine to transport fluids through a pipeline

The machine includes a rotor with an inner rotor core and an outer rotor core and a double-sided stator with an inner stator side and an outer stator side. The double-sided stator is concentrically disposed between the inner rotor core and the outer rotor core of the wind turbine generator. The double-sided stator is configured to enable at least a portion of magnetic flux to be shared between the inner stator side and the outer stator side. An example of a particularly useful embodiment for the machine includes a ship propulsion motor.

An electrical machine to facilitate transporting fluids through a pipeline is provided. The machine includes a stator, a rotor magnetically coupled to the stator, and a housing enclosing the rotor and the stator. The housing includes a wall that facilitates channeling a first fluid at a first pressure through a portion of the housing. The machine also includes a stator enclosure defined by at least one wall that facilitates maintaining a second fluid within the stator enclosure. The stator enclosure is positioned within the electric machine housing. The stator enclosure has at least one wall that substantially isolates the second fluid from the first fluid such that only the second fluid is in flow communication with the stator. The stator enclosure has at least one wall that facilitates heat transfer from the second fluid to the first fluid. At least a portion of at least one of the stator enclosure walls is configured to facilitate equalizing the first pressure and the second pressure.

An electrical generation system comprising a generator. The generator including, a stator portion, and a rotor portion, and a variable frequency generator (VFG) exciter. The VFG exciter including, a first converter, operative to convert DC current to AC current connected to a DC link and a second converter, operative to convert DC current to AC current connected to the DC link. The system including a first switch operative, when closed, to connect the first converter to the stator portion while the generator is operating in a starting condition, wherein the first switch is open while the generator is operating in a running condition. The system including second switch operative, when closed, to connect the first converter and the second converter in parallel to the rotor portion while the generator is operating in a running condition, wherein the second switch is open while the generator is operating in the starting condition.

A method to heat a stator bar and clip assembly in a brazing chamber including: placing the stator bar and clip assembly in the brazing chamber, wherein the assembly is seated in a heating coil; positioning a conductive mass between a press and the stator bar and clip; applying the press to the assembly while the assembly is seated in the coil; heating the stator bar and clip by applying energy to the coil; brazing the stator bar to the clip with the heat from the coil, and removing the press and cooling the brazed clip.
