A method for printing image data with a printing system having a staggered array of overlapping printheads. Adjacent printheads overlap in the cross-track direction defining an overlap region such that image pixels corresponding to the overlap region can be printed with either first or second printheads. The method includes defining an initial row interval N and an initial position of a transition boundary within the overlap region. N rows of image pixels are then printed wherein image pixels on one side of the transition boundary are printed using the first printhead and image pixels on the other side of the transition boundary are printed using the second printhead. A random process is used to iteratively determine updated row intervals, where the position of the transition boundary is shifted by an increment amount of between one pixel and three pixels for each row interval.

Printing with overlapping printheads

A method for aligning multi-channel digital image data for a digital printer having an array of printheads for each of a plurality of channels is described. A test pattern including test pattern indicia printed using individual printheads is scanned and analyzed to detect locations of the printed test pattern indicia. For each array position, one of the printheads is designated to be a reference printhead, and one or more of the other printheads are designated to be non-reference printheads. Spatial adjustment parameters are determined for each of the non-reference printheads responsive to the detected test pattern indicia locations. Digital image data to be printed with the non-reference printheads is modified in accordance with the determined spatial adjustment parameters.

Aligning print data for overlapping printheads

A method for aligning multi-channel digital image data for a digital printer having a plurality of printheads is described. A test pattern including test pattern indicia printed using individual printheads is scanned and analyzed to detect locations of the printed test pattern indicia. One of the printheads is designated to be a reference printhead, and one or more of the other printheads are designated to be non-reference printheads. Spatial adjustment parameters are determined for each of the non-reference printheads responsive to the detected test pattern indicia locations. Digital image data for the non-reference printheads is modified by designating an input pixel neighborhood within which an image pixel should be inserted or deleted, comparing the image pixels in the input pixel neighborhood to a plurality of predefined pixel patterns to identify a matching pixel pattern; and determining a modified pixel neighborhood responsive to the matching pixel pattern.

Aligning print data using matching pixel patterns

A method for aligning image data printed on a receiver medium in a multi-printhead printer that includes printing a test pattern including features separated by predefined test pattern feature separations, where some features are printed with a first printhead and some features printed with a second printhead. An image of the printed test pattern is analyzed to determine a first camera pixel separation between two features printed with the first printhead, which is used to determine a camera scale factor. The camera scale factor is used to scale a second camera pixel separation between a feature printed with first printhead and a feature printed with the second printhead. The scaled second camera pixel separation is compared to a corresponding test pattern feature separation to determine an alignment error, which is used to adjust the alignment of the image data printed with at least one of the printheads.

Method to determine an alignment errors in image data and performing in-track alignment errors correction using test pattern

A multi-printhead printing system, including first and second printheads adapted to print on a receiver medium. An alignment process includes printing a test pattern including features separated by predefined test pattern feature separations, where some features are printed with a first printhead and some features printed with a second printhead. An image of the printed test pattern is analyzed to determine a first camera pixel separation between two features printed with the first printhead, which is used to determine a camera scale factor. The camera scale factor is used to scale a second camera pixel separation between a feature printed with first printhead and a feature printed with the second printhead. The scaled second camera pixel separation is compared to a corresponding test pattern feature separation to determine an alignment error, which is used to adjust the alignment of the image data printed with at least one of the printheads.

Multi-print head printer for detecting alignment errors and aligning image data reducing swath boundaries

A printing system includes at least one linehead that jets ink onto a print media and an integrated imaging system that captures images of the content printed on the print media. Each linehead includes one or more printheads. A flat field correction method for the printing system includes one or more printheads printing a test block having a known print density on the print media and producing a density variation trace for each of the one or more printheads by capturing an image of each printed test block and averaging pixel data in a transport direction. A negative print mask is then produced for each printhead in the one or more printheads by inverting each density variation trace. Each negative print mask is added to, or subtracted from, respective print data values transmitted to each respective printhead in the one or more printheads.

Flat field and density correction in printing systems

A density variation correction method for a printing system includes printheads in at least one linehead printing a test block pattern on a print media. A density variation trace is produced for each printed test block in the test block patterns by capturing an image of each test block and averaging pixel data in a transport direction. The density variation traces associated with a known print density represented in the test block pattern are compared with a respective reference density value. A determination is made as to whether there is a difference between each density variation trace and the respective reference density value. If there is a difference, the density variation trace is adjusted to match the reference density value. The method can be repeated for all of the known print densities represented in the test block pattern and for all of the lineheads in the printing system.

A printing system includes one or more lineheads that jet ink onto a first side of a print media. At least one roller supports a second side of the print media as the print media is transported through the printing system. A roller deformation adjustment mechanism abuts at least one roller and is configured to apply a force to the roller to deform the roller. The deformation of the roller compensates for web skew by changing the relative timing of ink flight times from the linehead to the first side of the print media. The linehead can be disposed on a movable support. The printing system can also include one or more linehead skew adjustment mechanisms configured to move the movable support to adjust a skew of the linehead.

Web skew compensation in a printing system

A method for aligning multi-channel digital image data for a digital printer having a plurality at least one printhead is described. One or more spatial adjustment parameters are determined for each of the printheads. The spatial adjustment parameters can be determined by comparing locations of test pattern indicia in a printed test pattern to predefined reference indicia locations. Digital image data for the non-reference printheads is modified by designating an input pixel neighborhood within which an image pixel should be inserted or deleted, comparing the image pixels in the input pixel neighborhood to a plurality of predefined pixel patterns to identify a matching pixel pattern; and determining a modified pixel neighborhood responsive to the matching pixel pattern.

Modifying print data using matching pixel patterns

A method of printing is described for a page-width printer including a line head having a plurality of jetting modules that are staggered in a page-width direction. In a set up procedure, a test pattern is printed using the nozzles of adjacent jetting modules, and the pattern is analyzed to detect a stitch error in the overlap regions. The results of this analysis is used to calculate a set of correction values to be applied to print data subsequently sent to nozzles of the adjacent jetting modules to make a correction for the stitch error. During a subsequent production run, the print data sent to the nozzles of the adjacent jetting modules is analyzed to sense an image content attribute, such as gray or density level, of the print data. These results of the analysis of the print data is then used to calculate a dynamic adjustment that is used to adjust the set of correction values calculated during the set up procedure. The line head is then used to print the corrected print data by applying the set of adjusted correction values to production print data subsequently sent to the jetting modules.

Printing method for reducing stitch error between overlapping jetting modules

Methods and systems for printing an image on a receiver medium are provided. In accordance with the method, digital image data representing an image to be printed is received and, a print engine is used to print an image on the receiver medium based upon the digital image data and initial printing settings. A press sheet image is captured of the image printed on the receiver medium and, the press sheet image is automatically compared to the digital image data to detect differences. Selected types of differences can be identified or can be addressed by adapting the press sheet image or adjusting digital image data prior to comparison.

Adaptive printing

A proof generation method is disclosed for proof printers. The method includes receiving halftoned primary color print data to be printed on a target halftone printing press. This halftoned primary color print data has been produced by a first halftoning technique, and is at least comparable to a target halftoning technique used by the target halftone printing press. A second, different halftoning technique is also applied to the print data. The two halftoning techniques are selected to cause a dot size in data provided to the proofing printer to more closely match a dot size for the halftone printing press, and cause a proof produced by the proofing printer to substantially match the color of a print produced by the target halftone printing press.

Print proofing with color and screen matching

A system and method for use in testing and calibrating both electronic and traditional photographic devices. An illuminator with solid-state emitters and having independent control of both output spectral characteristics and power level enable the system and method to accurately test and calibrate the desired equipment.
