An intravascular temperature management catheter includes a shaft through which working fluid can circulate to and from a proximal location on the shaft. The catheter extends from a connector hub. At least one heat exchange member is supported by a distal part of the shaft or other part of the catheter to receive circulating working fluid from the proximal location. A temperature sensor is supported on the catheter for generating a temperature signal representative of blood temperature to a control system. The temperature sensor includes first and second conductive leads having respective first and second distal segments on or in the catheter shaft. The first and second distal segments are arranged to be in thermal contact with blood flowing past the catheter when the catheter is disposed in a blood vessel of a patient. Also, the temperature sensor includes a joining body connected to proximal segments of the first and second leads. The joining body may be supported in the hub or in another location proximal to the first and second conductive leads.

A cryotherapy system includes a cryotherapy catheter having an inflatable balloon portion and a pressure regulator. The inflatable balloon portion includes an outer balloon and an inner balloon within the outer balloon. The inner balloon is configured to receive during a cryotherapy procedure a cryogenic agent for extracting heat from body tissue at a desired location. The inflatable balloon portion is at a distal end of the cryotherapy catheter. The pressure regulator is adapted to maintain a positive pressure between the inner balloon and the outer balloon during a cryotherapy procedure.

In some implementations, a method of ablating body tissue includes (a) locating an inflatable balloon portion of a cryotherapy balloon catheter at a treatment site internal to a patient's body, and inflating the inflatable balloon portion; (b) employing electrodes that are disposed on an expandable surface of the inflatable balloon portion to electrically characterize body tissue at the treatment site; (c) ablating the body tissue by supplying a cryotherapy agent to the inflatable balloon portion to cool the body tissue to a therapeutic temperature; (d) employing the electrodes to determine whether the ablating caused desired electrical changes in the body tissue; and (e) repeating (c) and (d) when it is determined that the ablating did not cause the desired electrical changes.

A cryotherapy catheter can include an elongate member and an inflatable balloon portion at a distal end of the elongate member. The inflatable balloon portion can have an external surface and an interior chamber, and the external surface can include a cooling region and a thermally insulated region. The interior chamber can be configured to receive during a cryotherapy procedure a cryogenic agent for extracting heat from body tissue that is in contact with the cooling region. A thermal profiling component can be disposed in the interior chamber and configured to thermally insulate the thermally insulated region from the cryogenic agent to minimize heat extraction by the cryogenic agent from body tissue that is in contact with the thermally insulated region.

Providing cryotherapy with a balloon catheter having a non-uniform thermal profile

A catheter can include a shaft; an inflatable balloon having a proximal end that is anchored to an end of the shaft; an elongate member that is separate from and disposed inside the shaft, extends into an interior chamber of the balloon, and is anchored to a distal end of the balloon; and a spring member that exerts a distally-oriented longitudinal force on the elongate member, relative to the shaft, where the distally-oriented longitudinal force causes the balloon to be biased in an extended position, away from the end of the shaft. The catheter can further include a sheath that surrounds the shaft and balloon before a treatment procedure. The balloon can be configured to be advanced outside the sheath during a treatment procedure and inflated, and the spring member can be configured to facilitate deflation and withdrawal of the balloon into the sheath following the procedure.
