An apparatus has a first plate having a first array of holes, with a first plate alignment hole having a smaller size than the other holes in the array, a second plate having a second array of holes to be alignable to the first array of holes, a second plate alignment hole having a smaller size than the other holes in the array, and the first plate alignment hole and the second plate alignment hole having different positions. A method of aligning plates provides a first plate having a top and bottom and first array of holes including a first plate alignment hole having a size smaller than the other holes in the first array, places a second plate having a second array of holes on the top of the first plate such that the first array of holes and the second array of holes align, directs light at the bottom of the first plate, locates a profile of the first plate alignment hole in the second array of holes to verify alignment.

A fluid dispensing subassembly, includes a first set of plates including a diaphragm to be operated on by a transducer, a second set of plates including at least one manifold plate to direct ink to an aperture plate forming an exterior surface of the second set of plates, and a polymer compliant film arranged in between the first and second sets of plates to attach the first and second sets of plates together to form the fluid dispensing subassembly. A method of manufacturing a fluid dispensing subassembly includes forming a first structure of at least a diaphragm and a gap plate adjacent to at least one side of a polymer compliant film, the gap plate further including an air gap integrally formed within the gap plate, forming a second structure of at least a manifold body sealed on at least one side by the polymer compliant film, placing the polymer compliant film between the first and second structures, and using the polymer compliant film as an adhesive to attach the first and second structures of plates together, forming a fluid dispensing subassembly.

A method of mounting a substrate having an array of actuators to another substrate in a way that reduces mechanical linkage between the actuators has been developed. The method includes cutting a first plurality of channels and a second plurality of channels in a substrate on which a plurality of actuators have been formed, each actuator having two sides that are parallel to one another and longer than two other shorter parallel sides of each actuator. The first plurality of channels is cut between the longer sides of adjacent actuators and the second plurality of channels is cut between the shorter sides of adjacent actuators. The channels in the second plurality of channels have a width that is less than a width of the channels in the first plurality of channels.

Method for reducing mechanical cross-talk between array structures on a substrate mounted to another substrate by an adhesive

A method binds a substrate having an array of actuators to a diaphragm array in a way that reduces secondary banding in an ink jet printhead that ejects a different color ink from each row of ink jets in the printhead. The method includes cutting a plurality of horizontal channels in a substrate on which a plurality of actuators have been formed, the horizontal channels being cut between rows of actuators on the substrate, and cutting a plurality of vertical channels in the substrate on which the plurality of actuators have been formed, the vertical channels being cut between columns of actuators on the substrate, the vertical channels having a width that is less than a width of the horizontal channels.

A fluid dispensing subassembly includes a diaphragm arranged to be operated on by a transducer, an aperture array through which fluid is forced onto a substrate, a manifold body between the diaphragm and the aperture array, a spacer between the manifold body and the aperture array, the spacer arranged to form a gap at least partially overlapping the manifold, and a compliant film arranged between the manifold body and the spacer such that the fluid resides on a side of the film adjacent the manifold, and that the film is unsupported by the spacer over a least a portion of the manifold. A print head has an array of jets formed in a jet stack to deliver ink to an image receptor and at least one ink reservoir to deliver ink to the jet stack. Control circuitry is arranged on the jet stack with an actuator array arranged on the control circuitry to cause the reservoir to deliver ink in response to signals from the control circuitry. A ground plane is arranged between the actuators and the ink reservoir. A print head has an array of jets formed into a jet stack to deliver ink to a printing medium and an actuator array formed on the jet stack, each actuator separated from other actuators by gaps. A spacer is arranged on the jet stack so as to fill the gaps between the actuators.
