Magnesium metal is produced by the reaction of aluminum metal with a calcium magnesium aluminate slag or with magnesium oxide in the presence of such slag, wherein the silicon dioxide content of the slag is maintained at five weight percent or less. An excess of aluminum metal relative to the amount of magnesium oxide is employed thereby obtaining a high conversion of the magnesium oxide to magnesium metal.

Process for producing magnesium utilizing aluminum metal reductant

Magnesium metal is produced by the reaction of aluminum metal with a calcium magnesium aluminate slag or with magnesium oxide in the presence of such slag, wherein the silicon dioxide content of the slag is maintained at five weight percent or less.

Magnesium metal is produced by the reaction of aluminum-silicon alloy with a calcium magnesium aluminate silicate slag or with magnesium oxide in the presence of such slag, at a temperature of about 1,400.degree.-1650.degree. C and a pressure of 25-500 millimeters of mercury.
