A heating element adjusts the curvature of a cylindrical wobble correction mirror to compensate and correct the scan line bow for an optical scanner. A current applied through the heating element along one side of the mirror will cause the mirror to bend vertically for a horizontal beam to adjust the scan line bow for a single beam and approximately equalize the scan line bow for multiple beams.

A honeycomb structure is formed integral with a raster output scanning system housing. A constrained layer damper is bonded to the honeycomb structure and the raster output scanning system is mounted on the constrained layer damper. The honeycomb structure and constrained layer damper provide support and reduce vibrations to the raster output scanning system. The cells of the honeycomb structure can be irregular in height, thickness, density or shape to further support and damp vibrations.

A fluid-filled heat sink is positioned on the emission surface of a laser diode. The light beam emitted by the laser diode aperture will propagate though the optically transparent fluid to be transmitted through an output window of the heat sink. Heat generated by the laser diode will be transferred by the thermally conductive fluid to the heat sink housing which will radiate the heat or transfer the heat to a secondary heat sink.

A segmented mirror with alternating reflective and transmissive surfaces and a refractive tilt place which laterally displaces two parallel beams are used as a beam spacer. A first beam is reflected by the segmented mirror and a second beam is transmitted by the segmented mirror. A third beam is refracted and laterally displaced by the tilt plate then reflected by the segmented mirror while a fourth beam is beam is refracted and laterally displaced by the tilt plate then transmitted by the segmented mirror. The segmented mirror and the refractive tilt plate closely space four parallel laser beams.

A thin film organic light emitting diode with edge emitter waveguide comprises, in sequence, a substrate, a waveguide, an anode, a hole transport layer, an electroluminescent layer, an electron injection layer and a cathode. Voltage applied between the anode and cathode causes the electroluminescent layer to emit light through the hole transport layer and the anode into the waveguide where the light is internally reflected within the waveguide and propagates through the length of the waveguide to be emitted through the edge of the waveguide. The electron injection layer also functions as a cladding layer to increase the efficiency of the waveguide. The non-emission edge of the waveguide may be sloped with a conductor layer to the anode and a conductor layer to the cathode forming a reflective surface to the non-emission edge.

There is disclosed a printing system in which an array of VCSELs as a light bar print head directly sends an array of light beams onto a photoreceptor without using an imaging optical element. In this invention VCSELs are selected to have a slowly diverging light beams. A photoreceptor is placed at a certain distance from the VCSELs where the light beam has a width equal to a desired spot corresponding to a given printing resolution.

A double bounce passive facet tracking system uses a single passive optical component of a toroidal mirror to induce a beam of light to track a facet of a dual mirror rotating polygon. A beam focused in both the tangential and sagittal planes is reflected from a convex facet of the polygon mirror to the toroidal mirror. The toroidal mirror collimates the light beam in a tangential plane and focuses the beam in the sagittal plane so that the beam is collimated in the tangential plane and focussed in the sagittal plane when it reaches the flat facet of the polygon mirror.

A remote split scan detector is disclosed which utilizes two rectangular cross section light pipes to transfer the light beam from a raster output scanner (ROS) housing onto two light sensors outside of the housing. Each one of the light pipes is designed to receive a light beam at its input end and transfer the light beam to an output end where the light beam exits the light pipe through a diffused portion of a side wall. Two sensors are placed in such a manner that each faces one diffused surface to receive the light beam exiting the diffused surface.

A passive facet tracking system using passive optical components to induce a beam of light to track a facet of a rotating mirror polygon. The properties of the passive components are such that they collimate a light beam in a tangential plane in a complete trip through the passive optical components and the passive optical components focus the beam in the sagittal plane so that the beam is collimated in the tangential plane and focussed in the sagittal plane when it arrives at the center of the facet.

There is disclosed an apparatus for machining curved facets onto several polygons together. The apparatus of this invention comprises a fixture which has a mill bed and a ram. The mill bed holds an movable plate and the movable plate holds a rotating plate. The rotating plate which will be fixed during the operation of the apparatus will hold a stack of blank polygons. The ram holds two motors which are connected to a cutter. The motors cause the cutter to rotate and gradually move down the cutter. The rotation axis of the cutter is parallel to the rotation axis of the polygons. Once the motors are turned on the cutter will sequentially cut one curved facet onto each polygon. After one facet is cut onto each polygon, the motors will be stopped and the rotating plate will be rotated to position the polygons to receive the carve for the next curved facet.

Apparatus for forming several polygons together

A raster scanning system is disclosed which utilizes a laser light source with a plurality of diodes, at least two of which are offset relative to each other. Either one diode or two offset diodes will be selected to scan one scan line. If two offset diodes are selected, two light beams can be generated to scan two partially overlapping paths to form a scan line. By changing the intensity of the two light beams or by selecting two different offset diodes, the scan line can be moved up or down in the sagittal plane. This concept can be used to correct the wobble of a scan line in which case, either one diode or two offset diodes will be selected to scan one scan line in its correct position. Also, the same concept can be used to correct a bow of a scan line in which case, either one diode or two offset diodes will be selected for each pixel to correct the bow in accordance with a pre-defined correction data for that pixel which is stored in a memory.

A scan angle doubling system using a rotating cylindrical drum with reflective binary diffractive optical element facets, a cylindrical mirror, and a lens to increase the scanning angle available from a rotating mirror polygon of a given size. The properties of the passive components are such that the output light beam from the reflective binary diffractive optical element facets of the rotating cylindrical drum is collimated and normal to the rotating cylindrical drum. The cylindrical drum, cylindrical mirror, and lens are arranged such that the rotating cylindrical drum and the cylindrical mirror are opposed to each other and separated by a distance greater than the sum of the radius of curvature of the cylindrical mirror plus the focal length of the lens, and the lens is interposed between the rotating cylindrical drum and the cylindrical mirror so that the center of the radius of curvature of the cylindrical mirror and the focal point of the lens means are coincident.

Passive scan angle doubling optical system

A sensor for a raster scanner is disclosed which utilizes two elements to detect the position of a scanning light beam relative to a reference level and also detect the start of the scan position. The two elements are placed adjacent to each other in such a manner that on a reference axis, the width of both elements are equal. Each element will have a varying distance between its edges scanned by a spot and such distance on one element will be different than the corresponding distance in the direction of scan on the other element except at the reference axis. Depending on the distances traveled by the light beam on each of the elements, the position of the light beam relative to the reference axis will be detected. The two edges of each element that are adjacent to each other, separating the two elements, must be parallel to each other and orthogonal to the scan direction to also use the crossing of the edges by a light beam as a start of scan detector.
