A process for the production of a pigment composition, comprising combining a) a dispersion of one or more non-polar components of a surface coating vehicle, or a non-polar additive for the pigment composition in an aqueous solution of a salt of a polar pigment additive, with b) an aqueous slurry of a pigment or a precursor thereof, before, during or after the synthesis of the pigment; and then isolating the pigment composition so obtained.

The present invention provides processes for the production of a pigment composition comprising: Ia) contacting a pigment, before or during its synthesis, with a water-immiscible carrier medium, and then completing the pigment synthesis to produce a pigment composition comprising the pigment and the water-immiscible carrier medium, and Ib) contacting the resulting aqueous fully-synthesized pigment composition with an aliphatic organic acid and optionally a water-immiscible carrier medium; adjusting the pH value of the mixture so obtained to below 7.0; and then adjusting to the pH value of the mixture to a value above 7.0 thereby transferring the organic acid into the aqueous phase; and isolating a pigment composition comprising the pigment and the water-immiscible carrier medium, or II) contacting an aqueous fully-synthesized pigment slurry with an aliphatic organic acid and a water-immiscible carrier medium according to above step Ib).

A process for the production of a pigment composition comprising precipitating a pigment coupling component from alkaline solution by adding to it an acid, in the presence of a pre-formed, water-soluble azo dyestuff; and subsequently coupling the precipitated coupling component, containing the azo dyestuff, with a pigment diazo or tetrazo component, ensuring that at no time is any substantial amount of uncoupled diazo or tetrazo component present, to form a pigment composition containing the water-soluble azo dyestuff.

C. or their salts, at a pH value at which the acid is insoluble in water, the temperature being maintained during contacting above the melting point of the acid until the pigment has completely transferred into the organic phase; increasing the pH to a value suitable to render the acid soluble in water and recovering the resulting granules.

A compound having the formula ##STR1## wherein A denotes an optionally substituted aromatic, isocyclic or heterocyclic residue; R is H, an alkyl residue having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an aryl residue having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms or an aralkyl residue having from 7 to 10 carbon atoms; Q is H or a methyl group; X and Y are the same or different and each is a non-water solubilizing group, or X and Y together form a fused aromatic ring system; and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and each is H or an alkyl radical having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms or an aryl radical having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, the alkyl radicals in R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 being unsubstituted and uninterrupted or being substituted by an OH, NH.sub.2 or CN group and/or being interrupted by an ethylenic group or an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen bridge, or two or all three of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may form, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, a heterocyclic residue, is useful for pigmenting high molecular weight organic material such as a natural or synthetic polymer or copolymer, or a coating composition for application to the surface of an article, or a printing liquid medium to yield shades from greenish yellow to red brown, exhibiting good fastness properties.
