An extrudate catalyst suitable for auto emission control is made from a solid, transitional alumina. It has a partially hollow interior and one or more platinum group metals deposited on the extrudate. The cylindrical extrudate has internal reinforcing vanes or ribs extending from the inner wall to the center of the extrudate particle. This configuration permits the catalyst to have the large geometric surface area per reactor volume yet, because of the openings inside the extrudate, the catalyst particles do not exhibit a large pressure drop when packed in a deep bed. These catalysts provide greater hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide conversions than do similar size spherical particles and they have improved light-off characteristics.

Doubly promoted catalyst with high geometric surface area

Suspended particles in exhaust gases, such as carbon and lead particles in internal combustion engine exhaust gases, are removed by passing the gases through a coarse filter and then through a fine filter. The filters may comprise a ceramic foam material and a catalyst material effective for the conversion of the carbon particles and/or gaseous pollutants in the exhaust gases to innocuous entities may be deposited on the filters.

Catalyst composition for exhaust gas treatment

A catalyst composition comprising a composite of ceria, lanthana, and alumina and a catalytically-effective amount of one or more platinum group metals deposited on the composite is disclosed. The composite is prepared by depositing a cerium compound on a calcined admixture of the lanthana and the alumina and calcining the composite. The catalyst is capable of operating in the combustion of carbonaceous fuel at high temperatures, e.g., greater than 2400.degree. F. (1317.degree. C.), for extended periods of time such as 20 hours with low emissions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

Rare earth and platinum group metal catalyst compositions

A novel continuous reduction process is disclosed for recovering values of metals having a more positive reduction potential than hydrogen from an aqeuous solution. The process includes the steps of contacting the aqueous solution containing metal value in a reactor with a metal catalyst consisting essentially of Pt or Pd metal dispersed on an inert catalyst support in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of hydrogen substantially dissolved in the aqueous solution to reduce the metal value and deposit free metal on the catalyst, and separating recovered metal value from the catalyst. The catalyst support may comprise electrically conductive particles. In the preferred embodiments, the catalyst consists essentially of about 0.02 to 1 Wt % Pt on a porous carbon support and the aqueous solution contains gold or copper values. The process may be conducted co-currently in a fixed catalyst bed reactor with the solution containing metal values and dissolved hydrogen flowing upwardly through the catalyst bed at ambient temperature, while maintaining hydrogen partial pressure at least as great as 1 atmosphere. The process is especially valuable for recovering metals from dilute aqueous solution, typically in a concentration of about 0.1 to 100 ppm. Recovery in excess of 90% is obtainable.

Catalytic water treatment to recover metal value

A process for preparing a catalyst that has improved activity and efficiency for conversion of hydrocarbons is disclosed. The catalyst is prepared by applying sulfito complexes have the emperical formula M.sub.6 (x) (SO.sub.3).sub.4 where M is H+ NA+, K+ or NH.sub.4 + and x is platinum, palladium or mixtures thereof. In addition, the compounds M.sub.2 (x) (SO.sub.3).sub.2 and M.sub.2 (x) (SO.sub.3).sub.2 also have utility in our process. The complex salt is impregnated onto a support and activated by calcination in air or heating in a reducing atmosphere.
