When a cable-actuated power steering system is used with an outboard motor tiltably supported on a motor mounting pod of a pontoon boat, interference between a valve actuator housing on the end of a cylinder ram of a hydraulic cylinder unit and a side wall of pod is avoided by offsetting the cylinder toward one side wall of the pod so that the actuator housing can move through its full range without interfering with the opposite side wall, and connecting the cable-activated steering rod to a lever on top of the actuator through an L-shaped secondary link that has a first part extending laterally from an end of the steering rod and a second part extending from the first part to the lever in a direction opposite to the direction in which the cylinder ram extends from the cylinder.

Steering apparatus for outboard motor

A power steering system for a marine steering includes a hydraulic cylinder, an actuator block that is mounted on an outer end of a ram of the cylinder, and valving. In one embodiment, the valving is located in the hydraulic cylinder and includes at least one flow limiting valve that, through an initial portion of a stroke thereof, limits fluid flow rates through the valve to a generally constant, relatively low level. This limits the rate of extension or retraction of the ram out of or into the barrel and prevents valve chatter. In another embodiment the valving includes ball-type check valves that are located within the actuator block and that are actuated by a rocker arm assembly in the actuator block.

Marine power steering system

A power steering system for a marine steering includes a hydraulic cylinder, an actuator block that is mounted on an outer end of a ram of the cylinder, and valving. An actuator arm, mounted on the actuator block, is connected to the steering link, to the steering rod, and to the valving. The actuator arm is configured to move on the actuator block upon the transmission of steering command forces thereto by the steering rod to actuate the valving so as to drive the ram into or out of the barrel and to transmit steering forces to the steering link from the actuator block. The actuator block is configured such that it can accept standard steering links of different engine brands.

A steering assist system for a marine vessel includes a steering vane extending into water in the vicinity of a steering device for the vessel and that is pivotable about an at least generally vertical axis by an electromechanical drive unit. The drive unit is energized by an actuator assembly in response to the imposition of external forces on the steering system. The actuator assembly includes an actuator that is movable in response to the imposition of external forces in the steering system and a switch that is selectively engageable by the actuator arm to energize the drive unit to drive the steering vane to pivot. The actuator assembly may comprise a biasing assembly that resists movement of the actuator creating a force threshold that must be overcome to engage the switch. The biasing assembly may take the form of one or more springs, preferably having a settable preset.

Electromechanically actuated steering vane for marine vessel

A hydraulic lock of a tiller-based watercraft steering system is responsive to tiller release to lock a watercraft's steered element in the last commanded position upon tiller release. The hydraulic lock can be controlled through an actuator assembly that is provided between a tiller arm and the watercraft's steered element. One or more cables connect the actuator assembly to other components of the hydraulic lock. A thermal compensator regulates pressure within the hydraulic lock by accommodating changes in temperature related characteristics of the fluid within the hydraulic lock Increases in fluid pressure due to thermal expansion can be mitigated within the thermal compensator by automatically or manually directing a volume of fluid from the hydraulic lock, through a compensating valve assembly, and into a reservoir. Decreases in fluid pressure can be mitigated by directing fluid from the reservoir back into the hydraulic lock.

Tiller operated marine steering system

A tiller-based watercraft steering system is responsive to tiller release to lock a watercraft's steered element in the last commanded position upon tiller release. The system is locked by closing a valve assembly to prevent flow to opposed chamber of a hydraulic lock coupled to the steered element. The tiller preferably comprises an actuator portion which is movable relative to the remainder of the tiller. The actuator portion may, for example, be a grip on an articulating outer end portion of a tiller arm. The valve assembly may be connected to the hydraulic lock to form a combined module. It may be actuated by a mechanical link such as one or more cables leading from the actuator portion of the tiller to the valve assembly. The system may be used as either a manual or a power-assisted steering system.

A tiller is preferably coupled to the outboard motor or other steered element of a watercraft such that movement of the tiller in a first manner imposes manually-generated steering forces on the steered element and that operation of the tiller in a second manner imposes power assist steering forces on the steered element. The first manner preferably involves movement of the tiller as a whole, in which case tiller movement drives the steered element mechanically. The second manner preferably involves movement of an actuator portion of the tiller relative to the remainder of the tiller, in which case movement of the tiller actuator portion causes a steering cylinder assembly, an electric stepper motor, or other drive mechanism to impose power assist steering forces on the steered element. The actuator portion of the tiller may, for example, comprise an articulating end of the tiller's arm or a throttle grip supported on the tiller.

Tiller operated power assist marine steering system

A power steering assist system for a watercraft includes a hydraulically actuated steering cylinder assembly and a helm. The helm has a high pressure port being coupled to a fluid pressure source, a return port coupled to a reservoir, and a metering port coupled to a second chamber of the steering cylinder. A control valve assembly in the helm is switchable between at least first and second states to alternatively couple a metering element in the helm to the high pressure and return ports of the helm, respectively, hence alternatively permitting pressurized fluid to flow into the metering port from the metering element to steer the watercraft in a first direction and from the metering port into the metering element to steer the watercraft in a second direction. The system is simple, compact, reliable, and still usable in watercraft having multiple engines and/or multiple helms.

Power assist marine steering system

A power steering system for a watercraft comprises a hydraulically actuated, unbalanced steering cylinder assembly, a pressure source, and helm that is spaced from the steering cylinder assembly. The helm includes a helm cylinder having a slave chamber fluidically coupled to a second chamber in the steering cylinder, a high pressure port fluidically coupled to the outlet of the pressure source and to a first chamber in the steering cylinder, and a return port fluidically coupled to vent. A control valve assembly is movable between at least first and second positions to alternatively couple a control chamber in the helm cylinder to the high pressure and return ports. In order to facilitate mounting of the helm to the dash of the watercraft, the helm has only three ports, and all three ports are all located on a rear axial end of the helm cylinder.

In a marine hydraulic steering assembly for a propulsion unit there is included a hydraulic steering cylinder operatively connected to the propulsion unit and is provided with first and second chambers. A hydraulic output system is actuated by a steering wheel at the helm of the marine vehicle and is operatively connected to the propulsion unit for effecting common movement of the hydraulic steering cylinder in response to actuation by the steering wheel. The hydraulic output system including a second hydraulic cylinder having first and second chambers, and a reservoir, and fluid communication extends between the first chamber and the reservoir and the second chamber and the reservoir. A first hydraulic conduit extends between the first chamber of the hydraulic steering cylinder and the first chamber of the second hydraulic cylinder, and a second hydraulic conduit extends between the second chamber of the hydraulic steering cylinder and the second chamber of the second hydraulic cylinder, the first and second hydraulic conduits having expandable wall portions. Fluctuations in torque on the propulsion unit delivers or exhaust hydraulic fluid between the chambers via the hydraulic conduits to cause the conduits in the direction of the torque to expand to maintain the hydraulic steering cylinder at about zero pressure thereby effectually preventing external forces from pivoting the propulsion unit about the vertical steering axis and substantially reducing instability of the vehicle.

Steering mechanism

A steering mechanism for a marine vehicle operably connected to a propulsion unit, which comprises a hydraulic cylinder having opposed stop members, e.g., end caps, and is supported by a rod extending along the longitudinally axis of the cylinder. A piston is affixed to the support rod and mounted in the cylinder, and fluid passageways open to the cylinder and are spaced longitudinally to each side of the piston to form opposed chambers in the cylinder. The piston is provided with a longitudinal bore extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder, so that the bore establishes fluid communication between the opposed chambers. Valve member disposed in the bore is biased to a normally dosed position, but actuated to an open position when the piston is brought into abutting relationship with a stop member thereby establishing fluid communication between the opposed chambers, the valve member and the fluid passageways. A steering arm extends fixedly from the hydraulic cylinder and is connected to the propulsion unit. When hydraulic fluid is selectively transported to either side of the piston mounted on the support rod, the cylinder moves causing accompanying movement of the steering arm, thereby effecting steering movement of the propulsion unit.

In a power steering system for a marine vehicle having a propulsion unit and an operator actuatable steering helm, a power steering assist apparatus including a hydraulic fluid cylinder-piston assembly and actuated in response to steering actuation at the steering helm, and controls for maintaining anti-feed back upon a failure in the fluid source including a valve to establish fluid communication between a fluid source for the cylinder-piston assembly and the chamber in the assembly to either side of the piston thereby maintaining the chamber substantially full of hydraulic fluid during steering to effect movement of the piston upon steering actuation.

Power steering system

A power steering assist system, especially adaptable for a marine vehicle having a propulsion unit pivotal about a steering axis and including a steering member to effect steering movement thereof about the steering axis and an operator actuable steering helm, comprising a hydraulic cylinder, a rotary valve body disposed adjacent the hydraulic cylinder and having a valve control adapted to establish fluid communication between the hydraulic cylinder and a fluid source for supplying hydraulic fluid to the cylinder. A ball screw, operably connected with the valve body, and a ball nut, having a recirculating ball connection with the ball screw, is operably connected to the piston so as to move axially on reciprocal movement of the piston. Pressurized hydraulic fluid is supplied to the cylinder and to either side of the piston to effect reciprocal movement of the piston, whereby axial movement of the ball nut is translated into rotary movement of the ball screw so as to rotate the valve body. An output member is operably connected to the piston and to the steering member.

Power steering assist

A marine hydraulic system for operation of a power steering assembly includes a pressure accumulator to provide pressurized hydraulic fluid and valving that permits the transfer of hydraulic fluid within the cylinder to provide efficient use of hydraulic fluid.
