An optical transmission system is provided. The system includes first and second lines of optical fiber, each line including first, second, and third optical fiber portions, and an optical phase conjugator optically coupling the first and second lines. The first and third optical fiber portions have a local dispersion of like sign to each other, and opposite to the sign of the second optical fiber portion.

An apparatus for transporting an optical signal is provided. The apparatus includes sections of optical fiber span with at least one section negative dispersion, negative slope fiber positioned at a distance from the output. A pump light emitting device optically coupled to the optical fiber span near the output is provided for generating an amplification signal.

Disclosed is a telecommunications system link that includes plurality of spans each having a transmission fiber and a compensating fiber. The compensating fiber is selected to completely compensate dispersion slope while only partially compensating total dispersion. Enabler of large raman gain on small effective area fibers

A method for amplifying optical signals and an optical fiber amplifier for accomplishing the same. An optical fiber is coupled to a source of pump light and a signal gain level is correlated to a dispersion value of the optical fiber that corresponds to a local minimum power level of a cross-talk signal generated by four wave mixing. Optical signals are transmitted through the optical fiber while admitting sufficient pump light into the fiber from the source to attain the selected Raman gain level.
