Disclosed is a method for identifying lawn grass which includes capturing an image of the terrain in front of a mower, segmenting the image into neighborhoods, calculating at least two image statistics for each of the neighborhoods, generating a binary representation of each image statistic. The binary representation of each image statistic is generated by comparing the calculated image statistic values to predetermined image statistic values for grass. The method further includes weighting each of the binary representations of each image statistic, and summing corresponding neighborhoods for all image statistics. A binary threshold is applied to each of the summed neighborhoods to generate a binary map representing grass containing areas and non-grass containing areas.

A monitoring system includes: (1) an implant having at least one sensor and configured for at least partial insertion into a patient, a first one of sensors being in contact with a perimeter of a hole in a body portion of the implant for accepting a fastener; (2) a microchip associated with the implant and the sensor, the microchip configured to receive at least a first signal from the sensor; (3) a transmitter associated with the microchip for transmitting a second signal, representative of the first signal; (4) a receiver located outside of the patient, the receiver configured receive the transmitted second signal; and (5) a display device associated with the receiver, the display device configured to provide an audible or visual representation of the second signal to a user.

Orthopaedic implant with sensors

The present invention relates to an orthopaedic implant, such as a bone plate, for the fixation of bone where the implant also has at least one microchip and at least one sensor connected to the microchip. The sensor or sensors are configured to receive physical stimulus from a portion of the implant or the patient's tissue such as temperature, pressure, and strain. The information received from the sensor or sensors is gathered by the microchip and transmitted to a receiver, such as a personal computer, outside the patient. This information enables doctors to diagnose the useful life of the implant, the load sharing of the bone plate, and possible complications typically associated with orthopaedic implants such as infection, fracture non-union, and fatigue. The implant may also have one or more electrodes located on its surface which emit an electric current to stimulate healing of the broken or fractured bone.

A device for expedited reaming of a medullary canal having a detachable reaming head is disclosed. The device includes a reamer head connected at the distal end of a rotatable drive shaft. The reamer head has a cutting head with a plurality of blades and flutes therebetween at a first end and a plurality of resilient arms at a second end. The device may also includes an aspiration tube which fits over the rotatable drive shaft and a reamer head retainer which rotatably engages the reamer head. In addition, the reamer head may be detached from the reamer device for future re-use by using a reamer head removing device.

Attachable/detachable reaming head for surgical reamer

A lever for grasping bone tissue includes a shaft defining a channel and having a proximal end and a distal end, a claw member disposed on the distal end of the shaft for holding the bone tissue, and a rod threadably received in the channel and having a proximal end and a distal end. Rotation of the rod with respect to the shaft causes the rod to move substantially axially with respect to the shaft to selectively position the distal end of the rod with respect to the claw member. The lever may further include a locking member to allow the rod to slide axially with respect to the shaft. Various other features which improve the functioning of the lever may be provided separately or in combination.

An osteosynthetic implant for use in treating fractures to the head and neck of the humerus. The implant includes a body, a helically twisted blade having an oblate cross section, and a circumferential collar having a plurality of attachment points for sutures.

Humeral spiral blade

A device for expedited reaming of a medullary canal and method of using the same are disclosed. The device includes a reamer head connected at the distal end of a rotatable drive shaft. The reamer head has a cutting head with a plurality of blades and flutes therebetween. Each blade has a front cutting portion. The blades can also include a side cutting portion. The disclosed method for removing material from the medullary canal of a bone includes the steps of reaming an area of the medullary canal to remove material; irrigating the material to be removed while reaming to reduce generation of heat and move removed material from the reaming area; and aspirating the removed material while reaming to create a negative intramedullary canal pressure to assist in the removal of the material.

Surgical reamer and method of using same

A surgical drilling guide for guiding a drilling tool, measuring its penetration depth, and protecting surrounding tissue. The guide has a sleeve and a plunger that telescopes within the sleeve. The plunger and the sleeve have axial bores adapted to slidably receive a portion of the tool that protrudes beyond a drill chuck. The extended length of the drilling guide is substantially as long as the length of the protruding portion of the tool, and a maximum extended length of the guide is preferably as long as the protruding portion. As the tool in drilled into a workpiece, the chuck collapses the drilling guide. Gradations on the side of the guide indicate workpiece-penetration depth.

Drilling guide and measuring instrumentation

A standard attachment temporarily converts a drywall screw gun into a drywall router-bit cutter. Adapters unique to particular brands of screw guns may be employed to allow the standard attachment to be mounted on guns of the different brands. The attachment effects a twenty-times speed-up of the screw gun screwdriver RPMs to achieve required router-bit RPMs, while depressing a special function of the screw gun. Snap rings and snug slidable fittings are utilized to effect quick attachment/detachment. A belt clip on the attachment facilitates maintaining the attachment readily accessible. In an alternate attachment form, an external portion of the housing is substituted to allow the attachment to be mounted on guns of different brands. Different types of the attachment forms allow mounting on guns which may or may not have their depth control mechanism adjustable sleeves readily removed.
