An apparatus for transporting charged particles in a predetermine path which includes a donor member that is adapted to move charged particles on the surface thereof in the predetermined path. The donor member includes an electrode array on the outer surface thereof; the array including a plurality of spaced apart electrodes extending substantially across width of the surface of the donor member. A multi-phase DC voltage source is operatively coupled to the electrode array, the phase being shifted with respect to each other such as to create an electrodynamic wave pattern capable of moving charged particles on the surface thereof in the predetermined path.

A printing system for printing several types of data on the same page, regardless of any differences in spot density between data types. This circuit provides a separate channel for each data type and processes each data type according to its own instructions and parameters (halftones, compressed images, font generation, etc) and according to its own spot density, without there being a necessity for there to be any synchronous relationship between x and y spot densities of the plurality of data types. Each channel has a boundary checker to determine whether the data is within the image boundary by comparing the x/y coordinates of the scanning beam to the input boundary data, and a data converter to convert the data according to its own instructions. Finally, the output of the channels is combined to form the data stream that is sent to the printer.

A disk drive system includes a disk controller system having separate head positioning and data transfer subsystems and supporting up to four disk drives, two of which may be removable, portable drive units and two of which may connect through a standard ST506 interface. The removable disk drives incorporate a read and write protected data cylinder for storing information such as the maintenance history of the drive, and a read only cylinder for storing a unique serial number as well as other write protected data. The system also features a high capacity, high speed sector buffer which allows continuous transfers of data to or from noninterleaved sectors and supports concurrent disk and system accesses.

Disk drive controller system

A control system for use with an electrostatic developing system of a reproduction machine that normally remains in developing condition during machine operation. The control includes a lamp and circuit therefor which becomes energized to dissipate the charge on a photoconductive surface at those times and places thereon where developing is not to occur.

Selective development control for electrostatic reproduction machines

The present invention is concerned with a character input device, a disc memory, an output marker, and a character generator for converting byte format character information into an output marker bit stream format, and for allocating the converted bit streams onto the disc memory. The stored bit streams can then be retrieved to directly drive the output marker or to be re-allocated onto the disc memory (after merging with presently converted bit streams if appropriate). In another feature of the invention, the converted or generated bit streams are represented in a compressed form (described by a four bit run length code). These bit streams in the compressed form can be merged by the character generator directly into this compressed form without having to first decompress the bit streams, merge, and then compress again. Also printing systems can be configured using one or more character generators committed to one or more disc memories, and in turn, each disc memory can drive one or more printers.

Character generator

A copy reproduction machine is subdivided into discrete operating modules and coupled together by a shared communication line over which operating messages from and to the modules are transmitted. Each module includes a receiver for intercepting and capturing messages bearing the module's address and a transmitter for transmitting messages from the module and addressed to other modules over the shared communication line.

A copier/duplicator machine is disclosed having a plurality of devices for controlling different operations within the machine which comprises a programmable controller having program memory storage means for storing program words defining an operating program for controlling at least some of the devices and a first and second document exposure station and first and second optical imaging means for imaging a document at said first and second exposure stations. The first and second imaging means image the document onto image receiving means along different optical paths as controlled by the programmable controller. The programmable controller also contains analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion means for controlling at least some portion of the machine in a closed loop control circuit.

Microprocessor and control apparatus in a photocopier

A control system for controlling the processing steps of an electrostatic printing machine including means for generating a series train of clock pulses, means for generating a series train of start or reset pulses and control logic responsive to the reset and clock pulses to generate a plurality of timed control signals for implementing certain of the processing steps. A transfer roller, the linear surface speed of which is synchronized with the moving speed of the photoreceptor, may be used to generate the reset pulses for the successive cycle of processing operation. The intervals between the successive reset pulses, called pitches, are in effect marked by the clock pulses, some of which are used to generate the timed control signals.

Control system

A reproduction machine having a plurality of operating stations and a plurality of devices for controlling operational tasks of said operating stations comprising a master controller having an arithmetic and logic unit for controlling the devices in accordance with sensed operational parameters and a stored operation program and interface means connected in a communication path between the master controller and the devices. The interface means comprises a fiber-optic communication path for isolating the master controller from electrical noise and transients of the devices.

A programmable controller is used to control the operation of a xerographic reproducing machine adapted to run in a simplex or duplex mode whereby copies are made on either or both sides of web material fed in a single pass and then cut into individual copy sheets. The controller includes a control apparatus for operating the various machine processing components in an integrated manner from timed control signals generated in accordance with a master program, and a re-programmable master program for generating the timed control signals in response to the individual copy run program desired.

Programmable controller for controlling reproduction machines

A processing system having central control including an automated condition responsive system for automatically sequencing and integrating the operation of selected external features utilizable in conjunction with an electrostatographic reproducing process. The processing operation is monitored by means of a central timing control initiated in accordance with a preprogrammed sequence for each of the peripheral operations to be performed in conjunction with the central processing sequence. Sequence control is provided for controlling the sequencing of the peripheral operation in accordance with the timing cycles controlling the central reproducing process. More specifically, control means are set up for automatic document handling, sorting, billing, and jam and recovery control. By utilization of central command logic and separate processing logic, integration of all these operations in accordance with externally controlled program operation is achieved.

Control system for high speed copier/duplicators

A programmable controller is used to control the operation of a xerographic reproducing machine adapted to run in a simplex or duplex mode whereby copies are made on either or both sides of web material fed in a single pass and then cut into individual copy sheets. A control program, comprised of a set of program instructions, enables the controller to generate control signals for actuation of the process devices of the reproducing machine in a timed manner for production of copies as directed by the operator. In response to instructions by the operator concerning copy length, copy numbers, etc., the control program permits the calculation of requisite timing information for control of the machine operating components. The control program permits the operation of the reproducing machine to be responsive to the machine status in control of the machine operating components. The control program includes one or more subroutines for independently operating selected components of the machine to the exclusion of other components to facilitate servicing of the machine.

A master program for operating the machine components to produce copies in accordance with the copy run instructions inputted by the machine user is provided. The master program includes a subroutine to place the user's copy run instructions in preselected order irrespective of the order in which the copy run instructions are received, such order being correlated with the order in which the originals are presented for copying. In a second subroutine the controller periodically performs housekeeping chores checking the operational status of the machine.
