A virtual network image system (VNIS) maintaining virtual counterparts for each of the entities in a real-world, physical wireless local area network (WLAN) to which the VNIS corresponds. The virtual counterparts operate in accordance with a communication protocol that corresponds to that of the WLAN and under the control of a VNIS manager component. The VNIS manager component predicts and optimizes operating configurations associated with the virtual counterparts, based on 'what-if' analyses, to provide automation of various services relating to the operation of the physical WLAN.

An application-specific integrated circuit and related network switch are disclosed. The integrated circuit includes switch circuitry for receiving a 802.11 wireless data frame and forwarding it to a predetermined port. Inspection circuitry is provided for inspecting attributes of the data frame. Decision circuitry is provided for instructing the switch circuitry to forward the data frame based on the attributes, both 802.3 wired and 802.11 wireless.

Wireless-aware network switch

A programmable mobile terminal which includes a thumb wheel for selecting among a plurality of functions executable by the mobile terminal. The programmable mobile terminal allows a user to employ the same hand that is holding the mobile terminal to scroll through and select a function among a plurality of functions via the thumb wheel. The wheel portion of thumb wheel is rotated either clockwise or counter clockwise by the user's thumb or other finger to scroll a screen cursor through the functions and once the screen cursor of the mobile terminal is positioned at a desired function, the user can depress the wheel portion in a transaxial direction with the same thumb or finger to select the desired function. Also, the programmable mobile terminal allows a user to scan bar code information and use the thumb wheel for selecting among a plurality of functions relating to the scanned bar code information.

An adjustable clip having a first clip member and a second clip member. The first clip member includes a first slide tang that includes a first end, a second end with a detent tang. The second clip member includes a second slide tang having a first end, a second end with a detent tang. The slide tangs of the first and second clip members are positioned over the rail for installation and the slide tangs are moved towards each other until the detent tangs of the first and second clip members engage opposing ends of the rail.

A method and implementation for network communication is disclosed where one or more network access points are provided for communicating with a plurality of clients over a plurality of carriers. An arrangement is provided for monitoring on or more dedicated carriers for new clients seeking to associate with the network. The new client is detected over the carrier or carriers and he new client is then associated to the network over the carrier or carriers.

A battery pack adapted to be removably inserted into a battery receiving compartment of a portable electronic device for supplying power to the device is disclosed. The battery pack includes a plurality of cylindrically shaped battery cells and an elongated casing having two spaced apart ends and defining an interior region in which the plurality of battery cells are disposed. Outer cylindrical surfaces of first and second cells and an inner surface of the casing define two elongated open regions extending away from the first end of the casing. The battery pack also includes an integrated circuit board disposed intermediate a first end of the casing and negative and positive connector plates of the cells and includes conductive traces electrically coupled to the connector plates of the first and second cells. The battery pack further includes a pair of open ended elongated sockets adapted to receive respective housing terminal pins when the battery pack is inserted into the housing interior region, the sockets are affixed to the circuit board and extend though the apertures in the board and into the elongated open regions.

Impacts to the case of a portable electronic unit including a display are dissipated by a plurality of thermoplastic elastomeric damping elements which isolate an internal frame unit, carrying the display and associated electronic components, from contact with the enclosure. Each damping element is provided with corresponding positioning structures within the case to ensure that the frame unit 'floats' on protective shock absorbing material to provide three-dimensional support and damping of impacts incident from any direction. Damping elements may take the form of small caps of elastomeric material at spaced positions around the periphery of the frame unit. Electronic connections to the display screen are accomplished using flexible connectors to maintain the mechanical isolation of the display screen from the rest of the unit.

A label on which a grid-like pattern of detachable recording spaces is provided. The recording spaces are overprinted with a removeable coating formulated to provide a readily apparent visual contrast with the underlying coated substrate when the coating is removed. The recording spaces are designated to represent events, times of events, or both, by their association with identifying indicia on the label, and the occurrance or non-occurrance of the same is recorded by removing the coating from the appropriate spaces. Other labels incorporating security features are also taught. The label can be modified to meet specific recording needs by detaching and discarding appropriate recording spaces by tearing them from the label along provided perforated lines.
