A gas stream containing nitrous oxide and ammonia is contacted with a catalyst composition containing a zeolite. NO is reduced to Nand HO at low temperatures in a highly efficient manner. Ammonia-mediated reduction of nitrous oxide can be effectuated from gas streams having NO concentrations as low as 1%. The gas stream may also contact a catalytic composition selective for the reduction of NO. In this way, NO and NOtreatment may be effectuated in a single process stream.

A gas stream containing nitrous oxide and ammonia is contacted with a catalyst composition containing a zeolite. NO is reduced to Nand HO at low temperatures in a highly efficient manner. A stabilized metal promoted aluminosilicate zeolite, useful in the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia, having a silica to alumina mole ratio of at least 8 and less than 30 and an FT-IR absorption peak at 3781 plus or minus 2 cmwhich stabilizes the zeolite against further dealumination such as under oxidizing and harsh hydrothermal conditions.

The present invention is directed to an iron-promoted zeolite beta catalyst useful in the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia in which the iron-promoted zeolite beta is treated so as to provide increased amounts of the iron promoter in the form of Fe(OH). The stabilized zeolite is formed by cation exchange of an iron salt into a zeolite beta which has a reduced sodium content such as by exchanging a sodium beta with ammonium or hydrogen cations. A zeolite beta having a reduced carbon content and a Si/Al ratio of no more than 10 also increases the Fe(OH) content of the iron-promoted catalyst. The iron-promoted catalyst which has the iron in the form of Fe(OH) is characterized by a peak at 3680&#xb1;5 cmin the IR spectra.

The present invention is directed to a metal-promoted zeolite beta catalyst useful in the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia in which the zeolite beta is pre-treated so as to provide the zeolite with improved hydrothermal stability. The stabilized beta zeolite is provided by incorporating into the zeolite structure non-framework aluminum oxide chains. The aluminum oxide chains can be incorporated into the zeolite structure by a unique steaming regimen or by treatment with rare earth metals, such as cerium. The treatment process is unlike well-known methods of dealuminizing zeolites for the purpose of increasing the silica to alumina ratio. In the present invention, the non-framework aluminum oxide is characterized by FT-IR by a peak at 3781&#xb1;2 cm, which when present, stabilizes the zeolite against further dealumination such as under oxidizing and harsh hydrothermal conditions.

Methods and chemical compositions for treating a gas stream comprising non-halogenated and halogenated organic compounds while suppressing halogenation of the non-halogenated organic compounds with the oxidation products of the halogenated organic compounds in the gas stream are disclosed. The gas stream in the presence of oxygen is contacted with the catalyst compositions of the invention to oxidize the non-halogenated and the halogenated compounds to form water, carbon dioxide, and halogen molecules (Cl,, Br,, etc.) and/or halogen acids such as HCl, HBr, etc. An advantage of the present compositions and methods is that halogenation or of the treated emissions is suppressed over a process operating temperature range 400 to 550&deg; C.

A rotary regenerative catalytic oxidizer is disclosed which is a portable, compact system that catalytically destroys VOC and odorous compounds at elevated temperatures of 400 to 800&deg; F. Equipped with a very high thermally efficient rotor of 90&plus;%, most heat for reaction is retained in the apparatus, and the cleaned air at temperatures of 80 to 120 F. is safely discharged into room without causing discomfort. As a portable unit, it can be conveniently used to treat local areas where odorous and/or hazardous VOC and CO compounds are present and conveniently run off household 120V or 220V systems.

Utilizing a rotary regenerative oxidizer, and if desired, a plurality of heat regenerative beds incorporated therein, facilitates the use of regenerative technology at lower gas flow rates, increases thermal efficiency, and significantly reduces the floor space normally required when implementing fixed-bed nonrotary regenerative oxidizers. The heat exchange channels may be catalytically treated to enhance oxidation of the pollutants at a lower temperature.

Homogeneous catalytic regenerative heat transfer packing material is made by impregnating ceramic packing material with a solution of a catalyst precursor and then fixing the precursor into catalyst form. The catalyzed packing material is suitable for use in a process for the regenerative catalytic oxidation of waste gases, in particular, gases that include volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide or combinations thereof.

A system for the abatement of industrial process emissions comprises a horizontal regenerative catalytic oxidizer (RCO). The system utilizes at least two regenerative chambers and at least two catalytic chambers in a controlled abatement process. Pollutants injected into the RCO from the process emissions are catalytically oxidized. The horizontal configuration of the RCO reduces the size of the RCO per cubic foot of emissions treated, and also simplifies maintenance requirements in removing and replacing, or regenerating, the catalyst. Chutes and valves situated above and below the catalyst provide maintenance means without the associated contamination concerns typically caused by catalytic migration throughout vertically configured RCOs.
