Embodiments of systems and methods are disclosed to detect tampering and/or provide cryptographic evidence of tampering. Tampering is detected and tamper evidence is provided by incorporating at least one tamper-evident assembly and at least one processing device within an enclosure housing a host device. The tamper-evident assembly includes one or more tamper-evident fasteners, each having an identification chip, which stores a unique identifier corresponding to the tamper-evident fastener and transmits the unique identifier through the tamper-evident fastener to the at least one processing device when the tamper-evident fastener is coupled to a surface of the enclosure to secure a point of entry on the enclosure. The processing device may detect tampering and/or provide cryptographic evidence of tampering when a hash of the unique identifier(s) detected when the host device is in use does not match a hash of the unique identifier(s) detected before the host device is used.

Embodiments of systems and methods are provided to enable voters to access an electronic voting device and activate a corresponding ballot style without manual poll worker intervention or communicating information across a network. More specifically, an improved electronic voting device is provided having a ticket reader for validating a paper ticket inserted into the ticket reader, and subsequently voiding the paper ticket after successful validation. The ticket reader disclosed herein may utilize a wide variety of methods to validate and void the paper ticket inserted into the ticket reader.

An electronic voting system is described that utilizes printed vote records (PVRs) in which a voter's vote selections are recorded in voter readable characters. Optical character recognition (OCR) techniques may then be utilized to scan the PVR to record the voter's selections. The OCR data is then utilized to generate the cast vote record. Thus, the electronic voting system directly interprets the voter selections from the PVR just as the voter sees the data. In this manner 'what you see is what you get' printed vote record data is provided for a voter's viewing and that same data is used to generate the cast vote record.

Embodiments of systems and methods are disclosed herein to transfer a printed election sheet from a printer to a scanner, which is separate and distinct from the printer, without human intervention. More specifically, the present disclosure provides a retrofit automatic document feeder (ADF), which may be 'retrofit' or adaptively coupled between a printer and a scanner for automatically transferring a printed election sheet output from the printer to the scanner, where it is scanned to generate a scanned image of the printed election sheet. Unlike conventional ADFs incorporated within printers, scanners and multi-function printers, the retrofit ADF disclosed herein is coupled to receive a printed election sheet output from an output port of the printer, advance the printed election sheet away from the output port of printer and automatically transfer the printed election sheet to an input port of the scanner.

The present disclosure provides various embodiments of electronic devices, electronic voting systems and methods of voting that enable paper documents to be displayed 'under glass' for user review. In the embodiments disclosed herein, a paper viewing area is provided within an electronic device or electronic voting system for temporarily displaying a paper document to a user behind a transparent surface, which prevents the user from touching the paper document. In some embodiments, the transparent surface may be a touch screen and/or a display device of the electronic device or electronic voting system, and the paper document may be disposed behind and viewable through the touch screen and/or the display device when the paper document is displayed within the paper viewing area.

Embodiments of systems are disclosed herein to detect tampering and/or provide evidence of tampering without human interaction or oversight. In the disclosed embodiments, tampering is detected and tamper evidence is provided by incorporating at least one tamper-evident assembly and at least one processing device within an enclosure. The tamper-evident assembly includes a tamper-evident fastener having an integrated circuit (IC) chip, which is embedded within the tamper-evident fastener and configured to transmit a data signal through the tamper-evident fastener to the at least one processing device when the tamper-evident fastener is coupled to a surface of the enclosure to secure a point of entry on the enclosure. In some embodiments, the at least one processing device is configured to detect tampering and/or provide evidence of tampering when the data signal transmitted from the IC chip is not received.

An electronic voting system that includes transportable voting equipment is described. Such transportable voting equipment includes a carrier that may be transportable and easily moved to enable curbside/mobile voting. The carrier may be ergonomically shaped for usage by passing through a vehicle window and resting in a voter's lap. In one embodiment, the carrier may include a printer to produce a printed vote record. The electronic voting system may include the use of a base station (for example located inside a polling building), the curbside/mobile carrier, and a smart panel that is dockable and removable to/from both the base station and the curbside/mobile carrier.

The portable electronic voting machine comprises a smart panel configured to display voting process information; and a base station configured to house the smart panel. An election voting system is provided. The election voting system includes a printer for accepting printer medium. In one embodiment, the printer medium may be a paper printer medium. The printer medium includes mark(s) positioned on the printer medium that may be utilized to determine whether the printer medium is inserted into the printer in the proper orientation. The election voting system may include a sensor that identifies the presence of the mark. Two marks are positioned so that the orientation of the paper (right side up versus upside down) can be determined. In addition, in one embodiment, the marks are positioned so that even if the printer medium is rotated 180 degrees, orientation as to which side is up may be detected.
