A system and method for intentionally servowriting tracks having 1F runout on a data storage disk using a servowriter. The center of the servowriter hub is misaligned a predetermined distance with respect to the center of rotation of the servowriter spindle motor. The data storage disk is mounted on the spindle hub and tracks are servowritten on the disk surface. The tracks are misaligned with respect to the center of the servowriter hub to form 1F runout having a 1F peak amplitude and 2F runout having a 2F peak amplitude. The 1F peak amplitude is substantially equal to the predetermined distance, and the ratio of the 1F peak amplitude to 2F peak amplitude is at least about four.

System and method for minimizing write-over encroachment in a disk due to radial sinusoidal runout at the fundamental frequency

Sufficient 1f runout is intentionally generated on tracks on a data storage disk to prevent 2f runout from interfering with the alignment of a read/write head with respect to the tracks. The tip of a disk drive motor spindle is misaligned a predetermined distance with respect to the center of rotation of the disk drive spindle motor, a data storage disk is mounted on the spindle bushing centered on the tip, the data storage disk is spun up to an operational speed, and the read/write head is loaded onto a surface of the data storage disk, thereby generating sufficient 1f runout to prevent 2f runout from interfering with the alignment of the read/write head with respect to the tracks. Alternatively, the spindle bushing can be disposed at a non-perpendicular angle with respect to the axis of rotation of the motor spindle. The 1f runout has a peak amplitude that is at least four times greater than the 2f peak amplitude.

The current invention substantially removes particulate waste materials or debris from the floptical medium after laser etching. A low-temperature gas containing ice crystals is applied at a predetermined angle while the floptical medium is being rotated to improve the cleaning effect. The temperature of the disk is maintained above freezing to maintain the cleaning effect.

Method of and apparatus for removing debris from the floptical medium

The current invention provides an apparatus and method of collecting waste materials produced during laser etching of a floptical medium without blocking access to the medium surface. The invention also improves collection efficiency by applying a uniform low-pressure air around the outer edge of the medium. Because the air pressure is applied around the edge, there is no necessity to coordinate a movement or timing of the current invention with respect to the laser etching unit.

An apparatus and method for etching a point on the surface of a magnetic medium to reduce the reflectivity of the point and for verifying that proper etching occurred. A light source provides a collimated incident beam of light. The incident beam is focused to a point on the medium and a portion of the beam is reflected. The reflected beam is separated from the incident beam and the intensity of the reflected beam is measured. The measured intensity is compared to a threshold value and verification is indicated if the measured intensity exceeds the threshold value.
