A light extraction film having nanoparticles with engineered periodic structures. The light extraction film includes a substantially transparent substrate, low index one-dimensional or two-dimensional periodic structures on the substrate, and a high index planarizing backfill layer applied over the periodic structures. Light scattering nanoparticles are either applied in a layer over the periodic structures or included in the backfill layer.

The exposure indicating device comprises a material having an index of refraction that changes as a function of exposure to a chemical vapor, where the exposure indicating device provides an optical signal that changes in optical property as a function of exposure to the chemical vapor.

A multifunctional optical film for enhancing light extraction includes a flexible substrate, a structured layer, and a backfill layer. The structured layer effectively uses microreplicated diffractive or scattering nanostructures located near enough to the light generation region to enable extraction of an evanescent wave from an organic light emitting diode (OLED) device. The backfill layer has a material having an index of refraction different from the index of refraction of the structured layer. The backfill layer also provides a planarizing layer over the structured layer in order to conform the light extraction film to a layer of an OLED lighting device such as solid state lighting devices or backlight units. The film may have additional layers added to or incorporated within it to an emissive surface in order to effect additional functionalities beyond improvement of light extraction efficiency.

A system and method for fabricating structures in an optical substrate. An optical element produces first and second write beams that intersect at a first intersection location at the optical substrate. The first intersection location includes a fringe pattern produced by the first and second write beams. The optical element also produces first and second reference beams that intersect and are recombined at a second intersection location in substantially the same plane as the first intersection location. A controller then controls relative positioning between the optical substrate and the fringe pattern based on a signal derived from the recombined first and second reference beams.

Fabrication of structures in an optical substrate

A tunable interferometer for creating an interference pattern of variable periodicity at a fixed location is disclosed. The interferometer includes an optical element for splitting an input beam into a first write beam and a second write beam which are parallel to one another and have a variable distance therebetween. The interferometer also includes a beam directing element for receiving the parallel first and second write beams to intersect at the fixed location with an angle of intersection which is a function of the variable distance between the parallel first and second write beams received.

A method for adjusting a photosensitive optical waveguide having an optical path length to a stabilized desired optical path length. The method includes the step of changing the optical path length of the photosensitive optical waveguide by exposing at least a first portion of the waveguide to actinic radiation and creating an induced index change in the exposed first portion. The waveguide then is subjected to an annealing cycle that stabilizes the waveguide. After the step of stabilizing the waveguide, the optical path length is adjusted by subjecting at least a selected part of the exposed first portion of the waveguide to a localized heating sufficient to change the refractive index at the selected part until the desired optical path length is achieved.
