A method includes receiving an outgoing data stream and dividing the outgoing data stream to generate multiple electromagnetic signals in multiple channels using a first manifold. The method also includes modifying at least some of the electromagnetic signals in at least some of the channels to generate scrambled electromagnetic signals. The method further includes combining the scrambled electromagnetic signals to generate one or more outgoing scrambled combined electromagnetic signals using a second manifold. In addition, the method includes transmitting the one or more outgoing scrambled combined electromagnetic signals. The outgoing data stream may include an outgoing optical data stream, and a photonic integrated circuit may divide the outgoing optical data stream and produce scrambled optical signals. The photonic integrated circuit may be configured to handle outgoing optical data streams having different protocols and/or different data rates.

Information scrambling systems and methods

A device includes a photonic integrated circuit having an optical phased array. The optical phased array includes multiple array elements, where each array element includes (i) an antenna element configured to transmit or receive optical signals and (ii) a phase modulator configured to phase-shift the optical signals transmitted or received by the antenna element. The device also includes multiple digital register in integrated circuit (DRIIC) cells, where each DRIIC cell is associated with one of the array elements. The DRIIC cells are configured to receive digital inputs and to provide outputs to the phase modulators of the associated array elements in order to control the phase-shifts of the optical signals transmitted or received by the antenna elements based on the digital inputs.

Methods and apparatus for a photonic acoustic-optic frequency shifter having an integrated layer of lithium niobate. An input port receives input light and an acoustic wave generator generates an acoustic wave into a deflection area comprising a layer of lithium niobate. A first output port exits undeflected light from the deflection area as transmitted light and a second output port exits light deflected in frequency by the acoustic wave in the deflection area.

Photonic acousto-optic frequency shifter

A device includes a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), which includes an optical phased array. The optical phased array includes multiple array elements, where each array element includes (i) an antenna element configured to transmit or receive optical signals and (ii) a phase modulator configured to modulate the optical signals transmitted or received by the antenna element. The PIC also includes at least one of (i) a source laser configured to generate optical energy, where the antenna elements are configured to transmit the optical signals based on the optical energy, and (ii) a receiver configured to receive and process the optical signals received by the antenna elements.

Photonic integrated circuit-based communication transmit/receive system

A method comprises operating a remote sensing vehicle comprising a host bus platform and a variable pitch instrument platform movably coupled to the host bus platform in at least one degree of freedom. The method comprises establishing a pointing position and scanning a target surface with the variable pitch instrument platform. The variable pitch instrument platform is dynamically movable relative to the host bus platform to vary the pointing position of the variable pitch instrument platform, thereby decoupling payload pointing from the host bus platform. Thus, payload data collection is independent of attitude control of the host bus platform. A method is provided of varying ground-sample-distance (GSD) value with a remote sensing vehicle. A remote sensing vehicle comprises a host bus platform and a variable pitch instrument platform for scanning or data collection of a target surface, and an dynamic coupling device (e.g., a gimbal(s)) movably coupling the variable pitch instrument platform to the host bus platform in at least one degree of freedom.
